Nashi Shinsui - Apple-Pear

The Nashi 'Shinsui' Pear Tree (or Shunsui) is an Asian pear tree that produces apple-pear or pear-apple fruits. The tree is similar to a pear tree, but with larger leaves. The fruit, which has a diameter of 6 cm (2in), resembles an apple, being round and flattened, with a pear-like taste. The skin is bronze, and the flesh is very refreshing, fragrant, and juicy. The harvest takes place in September, and the fruits can be stored in a cool place (cellar or refrigerator) until January. The Nashi 'Shinsui' Pear Tree is one of the best varieties of nashi, although it has a moderate yield. It is not self-fertile and needs to be planted near other pear trees or nashis. It is resistant to diseases and cold weather.

The pear tree is native to central Asia and has been cultivated in China for 6,000 years. It was introduced to Europe around the 6th century. The Nashi Shinsui Pear Tree is an Asian pear variety that grows in the temperate regions of China, Korea, and Japan. Although it has been cultivated for many centuries in these regions of the world, it has only recently appeared in our orchards.

While not frost-sensitive, the Nashi Shinsui Pear Tree will still appreciate protected and sunny locations. Avoid frosty and windy situations. It is easy to grow and likes moist and deep soils, but it dislikes excessively draining and calcareous soils. In winter, add a shovelful of wood ash, rich in potash, to improve flowering and fruit quality. Its spreading habit gives it a tall silhouette with a trunk that then spreads harmoniously. This habit facilitates harvesting and naturally improves the tree's ventilation, making it less susceptible to diseases. Its oval-shaped leaves, finely toothed on the edges, have a petiole as long as the lamina and measure about 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5in). In autumn, the foliage takes on beautiful yellow to red colours. Its white flowering is late, in April, which protects it from frost. The flowers have 5 white petals. They are not self-fertile, so it is necessary to plant another pear tree (such as 'William's') or another variety of nashi nearby.

This fruit tree is delivered with a "ready-to-plant" root ball. During planting, the root ball should be planted as is. The biodegradable tontine that surrounds the root ball and preserves the rootlets will decompose naturally during the plant's growth. By doing this, you ensure better establishment.
