Description

The Honey Kist® Nectarine Tree is a self-fertile variety that provides excellent production. Its nectarines have yellow flesh. They are large, firm fruits, dark red, about 8 cm (3in) in diameter. Their flesh has an incomparable sweet flavor, of very good taste quality. Harvesting can start as soon as they ripen, at the end of July, beginning of August, but can easily spread over several weeks as the fruits remain firm. This variety is resistant to leaf curl.

The species name "Persica" was given to the peach tree, which was thought to originate from Persia. In reality, all cultivated forms originate from northern China. The Nectarine tree is the result of a natural mutation of the peach tree that occurred in the 16th century. The Honey Kist® Nectarine Tree is a recent variety, an American mutation of the original Asian peach tree, obtained in the USA by ZAIGER GENETICS in California.

Like many fruit trees, the Honey Kist® Nectarine Tree appreciates light, rich, and deep soils. It does not tolerate excess water or heavy and compact soils. It is a tree of good vigor. Its semi-erect habit reflects a tree with a tall trunk that has many branches with vertical growth, giving it an elegant appearance. Its deciduous foliage is bright green and emits a slight almond scent. Its leaves are long, from 8 to 15 cm (3 to 6in) long and 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) wide, with a short petiole.
Its semi-late pink flowering occurs in March. This requires placing the tree, if it grows north of the Loire, in a sunny and wind-protected location. The flowers are hermaphroditic and self-fertile.
The fruiting results in large dark red fruits, ready to be harvested from late July. Thanks to their ability to remain firm, the harvest can spread over several weeks. This tree does not require too much maintenance. It tolerates severe pruning, but not every year.

Nectarines can be enjoyed raw, cooked, sweet, savory, flambéed, glazed, or deglazed. They pair very well with wine and certain meats, such as duck. They can be found in many recipes, including jams, compotes, pastries.

Planting and care

The Nectarine tree Honey Kist® is preferably planted from September to November. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day of planting, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water, in order to moisten the entire root ball by capillary action. Place compost at the bottom of the hole. Plant the tree in the hole, fill with a mixture of soil and compost. Gently firm the soil around the base of the tree as you fill, ensuring that the roots are in close contact with the soil. The root ball should be completely covered. Water generously.

The Nectarine tree Honey Kist® has a semi-pivot root system. It thrives in fairly deep soils. It also prefers a light and well-draining soil.

Care

Pruning instructions In the following spring after planting, a first training pruning will be welcome. Keep only the branches that will be the framework of the tree (about 5 branches). Fruits appear on one-year-old branches. Wood that has borne fruit will not reproduce. For fruiting pruning, prune the branches that have already borne fruit to 2 buds above the future branching. Remove the intercrossing branches in the center and shorten the longest ones that extend outward in order to maintain a harmonious silhouette.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time January to February, December
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
