Description
Coffee plant seeds or Coffea arabica, also known as Arabian coffee, allow you to grow several coffee plants at a low cost and observe them at every stage of their development. The coffee plant is a tropical bush prized for its glossy evergreen foliage, elegant pyramidal habit, and delicately fragrant white flowering. Native to East Africa, it is cultivated in warm regions worldwide for its famous red berries containing coffee beans. In our climate, it is grown indoors, in greenhouses, or heated conservatories, offering a beautiful ornamental plant with lush foliage.
Coffea arabica belongs to the Rubiaceae family and originates from Ethiopia, South Sudan, Kenya, and Yemen. The only coffee species cultivated until 1865, it is widely grown in tropical regions, particularly in Central America (Costa Rica, Honduras) and South America (Brazil), where it is farmed for coffee production. In the wild, it can reach 5 to 8 metres in height, but when grown in pots, it remains more modest, usually not exceeding 1.50 metres. Its shiny, dark green foliage consists of slightly veined elliptical leaves, measuring about 13 cm long and 5 cm wide. Its summer flowering, which appears after a few years of cultivation, produces small white star-shaped flowers, gathered in fragrant clusters. At maturity, the bush yields bright red berries, called "cherries", containing two seeds with the characteristic shape of coffee beans. However, fruiting indoors remains rare.
Arabian coffee is a non-hardy tropical plant that cannot tolerate temperatures below 13°C and perishes below 0°C. It thrives in bright but indirect light and prefers a light, well-draining, slightly acidic substrate at temperatures between 15 to 25°C. Sow in moist compost at 20 to 25°C, with germination taking 1 to 3 months. Regular but not excessive watering and a humid atmosphere promote healthy growth.
When grown in pots, Coffea arabica adds an exotic touch to interiors and pairs well with other tropical plants such as Ficus, Monstera deliciosa, and Strelitzia reginae, which appreciate similar growing conditions. Its elegant foliage and pleasing habit make the coffee plant an ideal choice for enthusiasts of unusual greenery.

Planting and care
Before sowing the coffee plant, soak the seeds for 24 hours in lukewarm water to soften the shell and speed up germination. Some gardeners remove the thin film surrounding the seed to facilitate water absorption.
The substrate should be light and well-draining, composed of seed compost mixed with sand or perlite. A slightly acidic pH between 5.5 and 6.5 is recommended. Plant the seeds about 1 cm deep, flat side down, and keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged. Place the pot in a warm environment, between 20 and 25°C, with high humidity. Using a propagator or a clear plastic bag can help maintain these conditions. Germination is slow and may take between one and three months.
When the first seedlings appear, remove the plastic cover and place them in a bright location, but out of direct sunlight. Water regularly with non-calcareous water, ensuring the substrate does not become waterlogged. When the young plants develop two to three leaves, they can be transplanted into individual pots with richer compost.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
