Description

Often sold under the name Calathea leopardina, this "leopard" print peacock plant is now correctly named Goeppertia concinna. As a houseplant, it is chosen for its architectural and rather sophisticated appearance. Its long leaves, striped with dark green on a light green background, pair well with contemporary decor.

Belonging to the Marantaceae family, Goeppertia concinna is native to Brazil, where the species is reported notably in the Southeast (states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais). It is found in humid tropical environments, in dappled light.
This rhizomatous perennial forms an upright clump, composed of narrow to lanceolate, 20 to 30 cm long leaves, a light green traversed by broad dark green strokes arranged on either side of the central vein. In a pot, it reaches 50 cm to 1 m in height and 30 to 50 cm in width. Its growth is moderate (allow a few years to achieve a good volume). The small tubular flowers remain rare in indoor cultivation, and the plant is mainly grown for its foliage.
Good news if you live with pets: calatheas are considered non-toxic.
In the home, it thrives in bright light without direct sun, in a warm room with high humidity, with a stable temperature, ideally around 18 to 25 °C (keep above 15 °C). This plant still requires regular attention, as it reacts quickly to dry air and temperature fluctuations. It is well-suited for a bright living room, bedroom, or a well-lit bathroom.

To showcase it, play with height: a simple pot (stoneware, glazed terracotta, matte ceramic) placed on a low pedestal highlights its upright leaves, while side lighting softens its patterns. In a "tropical woodland" style display, it pairs well with Ctenanthe lubbersiana ‘Golden Mosaic (for the golden variegation), Anthurium crystallinum (for the velvety veining), a Fittonia ‘Mini White’ as a pot border plant, and a Boston fern (Nephrolepis) with trailing fronds. The whole arrangement works very well near a window with a sheer curtain, or in a room that is not too dry in winter.

Location

Place it 0.50 m - 2 m from a window, with a sheer curtain if the sun shines directly. In summer, absolutely avoid direct sunlight, which quickly scorches the foliage; in winter, you can move it closer to a brighter window, while still keeping the light filtered. Keep it away from radiators, draughts, and frequently opening doors: temperature fluctuations and dry air are the most common causes of brown leaf tips.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water as soon as the top 2 to 3 cm dries out, thoroughly soaking the root ball and then allowing it to drain; reduce significantly in winter and mist regularly, especially during the heating season.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot in spring, every 2 to 3 years (or when the clump fills the pot), into a container that is only slightly larger.
Mix a houseplant compost with clay pebbles or perlite to improve drainage.
Apply a balanced 20-20-20 NPK liquid fertiliser for green plants from March/April to September, once a month (at a reduced dose or as per the label). Always water the day before or just before applying the fertiliser, onto already moist compost.

Houseplant care

Clean the foliage regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.
No specific pruning is required, but remove any damaged or yellowed leaves to encourage healthy growth.

Disease and pest advice

In case of red spider mite infestation, increase the ambient humidity and clean the leaves with a damp cloth.
