Description

The Philodendron longilobatum is a rare tropical plant that captivates with its long, deeply lobed leaves and slender silhouette. Perfect for adding an exotic touch to your décor, it fits seamlessly into contemporary or "jungle"-style interiors. To encourage its growth, place it in a spot with bright but indirect light and maintain fairly high ambient humidity.

A member of the Araceae family, the Philodendron longilobatum is an upright, spreading plant. Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, this species thrives naturally in humid, shaded environments. At ripeness, it typically reaches a height of 60 to 90 cm and a spread of 50 to 80 cm indoors. Some specimens, grown in large pots under optimal conditions, can be more imposing. The leaves of this variety are striking for their elongated, deeply lobed, lance-shaped form. Each can grow up to 50 cm long. Dark green and glossy, they have a smooth, slightly waxy texture, enhancing their ornamental character. Indoor flowering is rare and subtle. Caution: philodendrons are toxic if ingested, so keep them out of reach of children and pets.

The Philodendron longilobatum will bring a stunning tropical vibe to your home. For a lush arrangement, pair it with a Calathea orbifolia, with its broad, silver-striped leaves, or a Monstera adansonii, whose delicate cut-outs complement the Philodendron’s structure. These plants share similar needs for gentle light and humidity, simplifying their care. Add a moss pole to discreetly support its spreading foliage and add even more height to your décor.

Location

Indoors, the plant thrives in temperatures between 18 and 25°C, with bright light. However, avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorching, as well as cold draughts. With its majestic appearance, it blends perfectly into contemporary, minimalist, or even boho-chic décor. Place it in a large white ceramic planter to accentuate its deep green foliage, or opt for a wicker pot for a more natural and cosy atmosphere. In a bright conservatory or an urban jungle-style room, display it on a pedestal to highlight its beauty. It also pairs well with light wood furniture in Scandinavian décor or metallic elements in an industrial setting.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger pot
Use a well-draining, rich potting mix with clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot for drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for houseplants (NPK 10-10-10). Applied every fortnight during the growth period (spring/summer). Reduce to once a month in autumn/winter.

Houseplant care

Regularly remove dust from the leaves with a damp cloth to keep them shiny and allow them to breathe properly.
