Description

Philodendron mexicanum, the Mexican philodendron, is a houseplant you don't see in every home. With its long, arrow-shaped leaves in deep green with reddish undersides, this climbing variety fits perfectly into modern, bohemian or tropical-style décors. Easy to grow, it will thrive in a bright spot with a not-too-dry atmosphere. A practical tip: provide it with a support so it can display its full splendour upwards and prevent its stems from drooping too quickly.

Belonging to the botanical Araceae family, Philodendron mexicanum is a tropical perennial with a climbing habit. Native to the tropical forests of Mexico and Central America, this species grows wild in shady, humid environments, climbing up tree trunks. Its mature leaves, reaching up to 50 cm in length, are elongated, tapered and leathery, with a smooth, glossy texture. Their undersides display reddish hues that add character to the foliage. Indoors, the plant typically reaches 60 to 90 cm in height with a similar spread. Its growth is rapid. Although it rarely produces flowers indoors, its typical Araceae spathe inflorescences are striking in the wild. Beware, like many philodendrons, this plant is toxic if ingested by pets and humans, due to its calcium oxalate content.

Philodendron mexicanum can be discreetly tied to a support to prevent its vegetation from becoming too spreading. To create a lush tropical atmosphere, pair it with plants such as Monstera adansonii 'Monkey Mask' and Calathea orbifolia, for example. The perforated foliage of the Monstera and the elegant stripes of the Calathea contrast beautifully with the philodendron's long, tapered leaves.

The exotic appearance of the Philodendron mexicanum will add character to a living room, large bedroom, or even an office, as long as the right conditions are met: its growth is rapid when it benefits from a warm environment (18-25°C), well-drained soil, and high ambient humidity. It does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C but can be grown outdoors in tropical or subtropical climates. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burns.

Maintenance and care

Water when the top 2-3 cm of the compost is dry. Mist regularly to maintain high humidity, especially during the heating season.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Mix universal potting compost with coconut fibres, adding a layer of clay pebbles for drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for houseplants (NPK 20-20-20) every two weeks during the growth period (spring-summer).

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to prevent dust build-up and promote photosynthesis.
Remove damaged leaves regularly to encourage healthy growth.
