Description
This affordable duo of Kansas Feathery Plumes showcases two excellent varieties of Liatris spicata, 'Floristan White' and 'Floristan Violet'. These deciduous perennial plants with narrow leaves bloom generously from July to September and their feathery flower spikes stand between 60 cm (24in) and 1 m (3ft) tall. Highly cold-resistant, they thrive in sunny locations with rich, well-drained, but moist soil. Ornamental in flower beds or pots, their long-lasting inflorescences are sought after by pollinators and often used in bouquets.
This duo consists of:
1 x Liatris spicata 'Floristan White': This variety features white flower spikes that can reach up to 1 m (3ft) in height.
1 x Liatris spicata 'Floristan Violet': The flower spikes of this variety are a rich purplish-violet and can reach a height of 60 to 90 cm (24 to 35in).
The Kansas Feathery Plumes 'Floristan White' and 'Floristan Violet' prefer consistent (clay) soil that is moist but well-drained. These perennials require soil that remains slightly damp in summer, but not waterlogged in winter if it freezes heavily. For planting in flower beds, place the taller Liatris 'Floristan White' in the background and the shorter 'Floristan Violet' in the front. We recommend spacing each plant 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18in) apart. Aim for 5 to 6 plants per square metre for a harmonious result.
Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus' and 'White Swan' go well with these Liatris plants, as they have similar soil and exposure requirements. A grass like Miscanthus sinensis 'Yaku Jima', which doesn't exceed 1.20 m (4ft) in height, will offer an interesting texture contrast. Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna', with its deep blue flowers, will complete the colour palette.

Planting and care
Liatris spicata enjoys clay, moist, but well-drained soil. This perennial needs soil that remains slightly moist in summer. However, caution must be taken in winter to prevent root rot in clay, waterlogged, and frozen soil. This plant thrives in full sun.
