Description

'Kudos Ambrosia' Agastache is a superb compact hybrid, producing a profusion of salmon-pink flowers from summer to autumn. Its aromatic foliage, with a strong menthol scent, fills the borders with fragrance. Provide it with a well-drained soil that is not too dry in summer, nor too rich, in full sun. Its lifespan is not very long but it multiplies easily.

'Kudos Ambrosia' Agastache belongs to the Lamiaceae family, which is rich in plants producing essential oils. These substances protect them from herbivorous animals and the sun's rays. This variety is no exception: its deciduous foliage, heart-shaped, dark green, and highly aromatic, releases a powerful mint and anise scent that delights the nose and repels pests!

'Ambrosia' Agastache is part of the Kudos hybrid series, characterised by a dense habit, as well as better cold and winter humidity resistance than other agastaches. From June to October, it produces tight spike-like inflorescences in salmon-pink, well above the stems. The plant forms a compact clump, reaching about 45 to 50 cm (18 to 20in) in height and 45 cm in diameter. Each flower is also enclosed in a purple calyx that enhances their colour. These flowers are also edible in salads. The hardiness of this variety, although not exceptional (-15°C in well-drained soil and sheltered location), is better than other agastaches. Moreover, it is highly nectar-rich and will attract bees and other pollinators, even in autumn when flowers become scarce in the garden.

'Ambrosia' Agastache appreciates full sun or light shade (its stems droop in too shady situations), and any good, not too chalky garden soil. In nitrogen-rich soil, the stems may also tend to droop and may require staking. You can pinch it to improve branching. Although its ancestors provide some resistance to hot climates and drought episodes, it will still look more beautiful and lush if the summer is not too arid. However, it dislikes excess water, so plant it in well-drained soil that prevents moisture from accumulating at its base. Coarse sand and gravel can be useful in heavy soil. Finally, choose a warm and sheltered location, protected from cold winds and severe frosts. Agastaches are still perennials with a rather short lifespan : don't worry if your plant disappears after 3 to 5 years, it's its normal cycle. Remember to divide the clump regularly. In pots, make sure to water it regularly, and it will reward you generously until autumn.

In a field of plants, it will form a beautiful combination with 'See Breeze' Erigeron, Hyssop officinalis, 'Caradonna' Sage, as well as with airy grasses like Feather Grass (Stipa pennata).

Planting and care

'Kudos Ambrosia' Agastache is a plant that especially dreads continuously moist soils in winter, as they harm its hardiness and can make it disappear. In heavy soil, pure sand can be used to install the stump without adding any soil. This plant requires a sunny and sheltered exposure from heavy frosts. During very harsh winters, cover the stumps with straw or dead leaves to form a thick mulch. The soil that welcomes it must be fertile, loose, well-drained but rather moist, especially during the flowering period. The plant can tolerate periods of temporary drought, which nevertheless harm flowering.
