Description

The Coreopsis grandiflora 'Sunkiss' is a deciduous perennial offering perfectly intense flowering to enhance flower beds, rockeries, and flower borders and brighten patios and balconies. It stands out for its large flowers with golden yellow petals spotted with brown, illuminating the garden from July to September. Easy to maintain, this plant forms a compact tuft of about 40 cm (16in) in height and can be grown in open ground or a pot. Vigorous can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F). This generous and undemanding perennial thrives in the sun in light and well-drained soil.

The Coreopsis grandiflora is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family, like daisies and dandelions. Native to North America, it grows in meadows and forest edges from California to Mexico. Its remarkable cold resistance, tolerating temperatures as low as -18°C (1°F), makes it a robust plant. Although perennial, it is not uncommon to cultivate it as an annual. Its uninterrupted flowering quickly exhausts the plant, which has a lifespan of only 2 or 3 years; however, it easily self-seeds. The term "coreopsis" originates from the Greek words korè, which means young girl, and opsis, which means eye, referring to the remarkable beauty of this flower, hence its name in some languages of 'Young Girl's Eye'.

The cultivar 'Sunkiss' is a perennial variety with single flowers that have rapid growth, reaching a height and width of 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in). This rhizomatous plant forms a dense and well-branched tuft from the base. Its flowering extends from June to September, with solitary heads of 5 to 6 cm (2in) in diameter carried by slightly hairy stems. It attracts pollinating insects. The intense green and deciduous foliage consists of opposite, lanceolate, entire leaves, occasionally incised at the base, and almost sessile (without petiole), about 10 cm (4in) long.

The Coreopsis grandiflora 'Sunkiss' is ideal for densifying small flower beds or adding colour to a slope or a > It can also be used to decorate the interior of a seasonal bouquet. This variety brightly illuminates the foreground of flower beds and borders. Once established in full sun and well-drained soil, the 'Sunkiss' Coreopsis blooms abundantly throughout the summer until autumn, offering highly appreciated uninterrupted flowering. It is ideal in a rockery or on a slope, paired with wallflowers, Damask daisies, and wild flax. It also integrates perfectly into a herbaceous border in the company of Germander (Teucrium chamaedrys), thyme, and cotton lavenders. This plant blends into slightly wild environments, bringing a colourful touch to these natural spaces, especially with grasses, yarrows, or echinaceas. Whether in a pot, container, or open ground, it blooms abundantly from the first year, offering a magnificent spectacle throughout the summer with minimal watering.

Planting and care

The grandiflora coreopsis and its varieties don't do well in wet winter conditions or heavy soils. To flourish, this plant needs plenty of sunlight and well-drained, slightly acidic, light soil that is porous, gravelly or sandy. This plant will bloom and live long in these ideal conditions. Remove old flowers regularly and promote autumn reblooming by doing this in July to encourage reblooming. This will also prolong the life of the plant. Revive tired tufts by separating them every three years.
