Description

This Duo of pink and white Dieramas brings together two different varieties of Angel's Fishing Rod. A winning duo to bring a touch of charm to your terrace or garden in July-August. Their arched floral spikes rise up to 1.20m from the ground, bearing graceful pendulous bells in pink or white depending on the plant. They emerge from a clump of upright, slender leaves, reminiscent of iris or grasses. Hardy down to -7ºC in well-drained soil, these South African perennials love heat, water, and full sun.

The Duo consists of:

- x 1 Dierama pulcherrimum: the species type with trumpet-shaped pink flowers

- x 1 Dierama pulcherrimum 'Album': a pure white flower form

To be planted in rich, light, non-limestone soil, preferably in full sun. A mixture of compost, sand, and garden soil will be suitable. Allow for a spacing of 80 cm between each plant, as the Dierama's crown can occupy nearly 1 m². Dierama pulcherrimum is very well suited to coastal areas. Outside of regions with mild winters, grow in a large pot. This allows the plants to be sheltered in winter in a bright, but minimally heated, space. In the ground, place a thick layer of mulch over their crown, several tens of cm thick.

These Dieramas deserve a prime location. In the garden, they can be planted individually, for example at the end of a path or near a water feature. In a flower bed, associate them with grasses such as Miscanthus 'Boucle' and Pennisetum 'Red Head' for example. Add a Phormium 'Black Adder' with its very dark foliage to enhance the grace of its companions.

Planting and care

Plant your Dierama plucherrimum in a sunny location, in light, well-worked, humus-bearing soil that remains moist in the summer but is well-drained to prevent corm rot in the winter. Their cultivation is a bit delicate during the first few years, requiring special attention, but once established, the plant is less demanding in terms of water and better able to withstand normal winters. Hardy down to -7°C, we recommend protecting your plants in the winter with a thick layer of mulch, but you can also grow them in large pots that you shelter in the winter. In pots, monitor watering during the growing season. In winter, during the dormant period, the soil should be kept just moist, never waterlogged. Dierama does not appreciate pruning (except for the removal of faded flowers), as it slows down its growth.
