Description

The Gaura lindheimeri Elegance is a beautiful recent creation, which has many qualities and lives up to its name. This plant has a well-proportioned shape and is adorned with an abundance of pearly pink flowers from June to September. The flowers are arranged in light spikes, giving the impression of a gentle breeze. The plant's deciduous foliage comprises small, velvety, deep green leaves with cream borders. The plant grows quickly, but it has a short lifespan. Nevertheless, it is an elegant and proud plant essential in any flowering garden. It thrives in dry to moist soil, even in poor soil conditions, as long as it is exposed to the sun.

The Gaura lindheimeri Elegance is a member of the Evening Primrose family and is native to the Louisiana and Texas prairies and pinewoods located along the borders of Mexico and the United States. It is known for its abundant flowers and loose clump-like habit that comes alive in the wind. This perennial has a taproot and forms a light and bushy clump that is slightly spreading, with a height of 80 cm (31.5 in) and a spread of 50 cm (19.7 in). The plant's bushy appearance stems from its branched, numerous, and slender flowering stems. The plant's flowering occurs in successive waves from mid-spring to autumn, with butterfly-like flowers grouped in paniculating spikes that are 30 to 80 cm (31.5 in) in length and of a pearly and translucent pink colour. The foliage is magnificent, with small velvety leaves that are edged with cream and dark pink and a relatively dark green lamina on both sides—the taproot system anchors the plant in poor, even rocky soils.

Thanks to their abundant and fast-growing nature, gauras have quickly become a popular choice for flower beds and gardens. These plants are resilient to the wind and become a must-have for anyone who tries them out for a year. They add a sense of lightness, volume, and grace to any location they are planted in. Gaura lindheimeri's "Elegance" is an excellent option for the background of herbaceous borders or flower beds. It pairs well with roses and grows alongside shrubs such as Abelias and Deutzias. It also complements perennials such as Daylilies, Catmints, Scabiosa Moon Dance, Asclepias Ice Ballet, and Oenothera versicolour. Additionally, Gaura thrives in large pots and balcony planters.

Planting and care

Gaura lindheimeri Elegance is not particular about the soil type, as long as it is well-drained, even if it's poor and dry. The only thing that can harm this plant is stagnant moisture, even more so than cold temperatures. To prevent this, incorporate draining materials such as gravel or river sand into the garden soil. With these conditions, the plant can live for several years. Pruning is essential after each flowering wave to encourage the emergence of new shoots that will bloom. This method can result in multiple flowerings from June until November without interruption. Avoid pruning all the clumps in the garden simultaneously. Pruning at the start of vegetation (March-April) will give the plant a balanced shape.
