Geranium cinereum Jolly Jewel Night
Geranium cinereum Jolly Jewel Night
Ashy Cranesbill, Greyleaf Geranium
I received three different types of geranium, and the only one that hasn't started growing is the hardy geranium cinereum Jolly Night. I'm very disappointed. This is the first time this has happened with all the orders I've placed with you. The young plant was very weak and hasn't taken off.

Description
The perennial Geranium cinereum 'Jolly Jewel Night' is a variety from the new 'Jolly Jewel' series, with very bushy and floriferous plants offering nine very bright colors to liven up the garden or terrace throughout the summer season, without requiring any maintenance. The bicolored and contrasting flowers of the 'Night' variety are pretty small cups of dark purple-pink enhanced by a very dark purple-red heart. They punctuate a delicate and finely cut dark green foliage. It is with its head in the sun and its feet in well-drained soil that it will give its best. Its precious flowers and natural style are well suited to rocky or wild gardens as well as sunny flowerbeds.
The perennial Geranium cinereum, or Ashy Cranesbill, is a member of the Geraniaceae family, native to herbaceous rocky areas in the mountains of southern Europe to the Balkans.
'Jolly Jewel Night', a recent Dutch horticultural variety, has a compact habit and a particularly long and colourful flowering period. It is an herbaceous perennial plant with a woody base that forms a cushion of 20-25 cm (8-10in) in height when in flower, with a minimum spread of 25 cm (10in). Its growth is quite fast, and the plant reaches its full development in two or three years. The foliage, semi-evergreen, is arranged in a rosette. It is composed of small, almost stemless, deeply lobed and divided pubescent leaves, dark green with ashy reflections, soft to the touch. The flowering period, particularly long, extends from May-June to August-September, with open cups, brighter than the type species, dark purple-pink around a very dark red-purple heart, grouped in clusters of 2 or 3. This geranium slowly spreads without ever becoming invasive.
The perennial Geranium cinereum 'Jolly Jewel Night' will find its place in rock gardens, at the front of perennial beds, and in sunny borders. It will be very effective in a flowerpot or well-drained container. It pairs well with the lovely variety 'Jolly Jewel Salmon' as well as with plants with similar needs such as the perennial Geranium renardii, the perennial Geranium dalmaticum, candytufts, sea lavenders, whorled asters and coreopsis. It is also an ideal small perennial for mountain gardens.

Planting and care
Plant the perennial Geranium cinereum 'Jolly Jewel Night' in open ground in a perfectly drained soil. It is satisfied with poor soils, even those that are stony, gravelly and calcereous. It above all dislikes waterlogged soil in winter, which causes its roots to rot. It requires a very sunny exposure to flower well and keep a compact habit. In pots, this plant requires regular watering, while allowing the substrate to dry out a bit between waterings. Special geranium fertiliser will support good flowering if grown in a container.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
