Description

The 'Rosenlicht' perennial geranium oxonianum, also known as the 'Rosenlicht' hybrid perennial geranium, is an excellent, vigorous and floriferous ground cover that offers a long, bright, light pink flowering. Similar to G. endressii, from which it originates, it is also vigorous, but more evergreen and darker in foliage. It can eventually form mats with a diameter of 80 cm (32in). Thriving on rainwater in the summer, it is a hardy and accommodating plant that thrives in full sun.

The 'Rosenlicht' perennial geranium oxonianum belongs to the Geraniaceae family. It is the result of cross-breeding between G. endressii, a robust, deciduous, carpeting ground cover from the Pyrenees, and G. versicolor, a taller, evergreen Italian variety that tolerates relative drought. This hybrid therefore forms a minimum 60 cm (24in) high ground cover, spreading over 80 cm (32in) or more under optimal conditions. It has an upright, dense and spreading growth habit. Between May and August, it displays its open trumpet-shaped flowers in a beautiful bright light pink color with dark veins. Its deeply lobed leaves are pleated, with visible veins, and have a plicate texture. The foliage is a deep dark green and evergreen. This hybrid is fertile.

This perennial geranium is a large, easy-to-grow ground cover that will find its place in perennial or low shrub borders, high edges, slopes, rockeries, and large pots on the terrace.

Planting and care

The 'Rosenlicht' perennial Geranium oxonianum is a hardy, accommodating and easy-to-grow plant. However, it prefers fertile, well-drained and moderately moist soils, although it occasionally tolerates drought, which will greatly reduce its flowering and vegetation. Place it in a sunny location or, at most, partially shaded. Prune it back after flowering to promote new growth. Prune heavily in July to renew the foliage and stimulate the re-emergence of flowers.
