Description

The Géranium phaeum Margaret Wilson is an excellent perennial geranium for shade with bright, variegated leaves of green and cream.

Originating from the forests of Eastern Europe, the geranium phaeum is very cold-resistant and grows in the shade of large trees. This perennial geranium reaches a height of 50 cm (20in). On long, upright stems, rose mauve flowers with rounded petals and golden stamens emerge. The flower measures about 2 cm (1in) in diameter.

This geranium boasts an abundant spring flowering from May to June. Its deciduous leaves, deeply divided into 5 large lobes, are pale green variegated with pale cream yellow.

This perennial geranium easily combines with a multitude of shade-loving plants, such as brunneras, epimediums, or bleeding hearts.

Planting and care

Place the Geranium phaeum Margaret Wilson in partial shade in a preferably moist but well-drained soil. To plant your bucket, work the soil to a depth of 20 cubic cm, crumble the soil well and add a bottom amendment such as dried blood or dehydrated horn. Position your plant, removed from its pot, by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, fill in the hole and water generously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root establishment.
