Description

The Perennial Geranium 'Lilac Ice' offers an exceptionally long flowering period and a fresh colour. This hybrid geranium, derived from Geranium 'Rozanne', is adorned with large mauve-lilac to pale lavender-blue corollas in late season, distinctly veined with violet. It blooms from mid-summer to autumn, forming a dense flowery carpet, adorned with finely cut foliage. Perfect for borders and as ground cover. It is a superb and easy-to-grow plant in partial shade or full sun, in well-drained and humus-rich soil.

The perennial geranium 'Lilac Ice' belongs to the Geraniaceae family. It is derived from the famous 'Rozanne', a guarantee of floriferousness and vigour. The spreading habit of this variety will allow it to occupy 60 cm (24in) of ground, reaching a height of 30 cm (12in). It flowers at the top of branched stems, from May-June to October-November. The corollas, with a diameter of 50 to 60 mm (2in), have a very refreshing, almost pearlescent colour, which slightly changes throughout the season: it is initially lilac pink and then evolves towards pale blue with the cooler temperatures of autumn. The violet veins are clearly visible. The dark violet anthers stand out well against the lighter centre. The foliage is deciduous, composed of large, finely cut leaves, a vibrant green colour, and slightly pubescent.

Like many other perennial geranium species, Geranium 'Lilac Ice' is a superb plant that provides nectar and pollen for numerous insects such as butterflies and bees. Ideal for a cottage garden, in borders, along pathways or on slopes, this geranium covers the ground well and adds a colorful touch to perennial beds in full sun. Though it may be slightly less showy, it blooms very well in partial shade as well as full sun. It will prove to be a good companion for columbines, peonies, lupins, campanulas, poppies, and other tall daisies.

Planting and care

The 'Lilac Ice' perennial Geranium prefers a partially shaded site and a moist to dry, well-drained soil, even if it is alkaline. It dreads waterlogged soils that would cause it to rot. In heavy soil, incorporate leaf compost into the planting hole. It prefers sun or partial shade, and tolerates shade although it will be less floriferous. In cold climates, it is advisable to protect the stump during winter with a good mulch, especially in the first few years. Provide it with some well-decomposed compost at planting and each spring, as you clean off the old, dry leaves.
