Hemerocallis Angelus Angel - Daylily

Hemerocallis Angelus Angel is a very floriferous variety whose flowers reminiscent of hibiscus take a little time to appear at the end of June or the beginning of July. It displays dainty, fleshy, fairly round flowers in a wonderful blend of melon and apricot washed with cream, all shaded with pink, around a yellow-orange throat. The intensely undulate margin of each petal is enhanced with a golden yellow fringe. It quickly forms very flowery clumps, remarkable in the middle of summer. It is a vigorous and easy to grow perennial, whose success is guaranteed in not too dry and fertile soil. Truly superb!

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are perennial and hardy plants whose foliage is deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen. The variety 'Angelus Angel', was created in 1985 and awarded in 1991.  It grows in a fairly dense clump that will reach 60 cm (24in) in height when flowering, 50 cm (20in) for the foliage, with a relative spread of 40 cm (16in).  Daylilies tend to spread a little when they like the terrain. The flowers, rather round in shape, are slightly triangular. They measure about 14 cm (6in) in diameter, the petals in this variety are very rounded and thick, with a pleated and embossed texture, and gracefully fringed at the edge. Each flower lasts no more than a day, and fades in a delightful salmon pink colour. The flowering continuously renews over a beautiful period, even until August if the soil remains damp. The stems are robust and adorned with numerous buds. The foliage, bright green, is linear and deciduous. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils, but are more opulent and more floriferous in damp soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive both in shade and in the sun. Some of them can be a bit invasive, don't hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. The daylily is often called "the perfect perennial plant", due to its vibrant colours, its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to its lack of modesty, it has a beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your flower beds. All summer, bulb flowers can be planted alongside daylilies. 'Angelus Angel' will fit perfectly alongside the blue flowers of perennial geraniums Rozanne or Blue Cloud, campanulas, or Anchusa for example. The association with a small grass like Muhlenbergia capillaris or Stipa tenuifolia will lighten its flowering. On a balcony or patio, large pots of at least 30 cm (12in) in depth should be provided and dwarf varieties should be chosen. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.
