Hemerocallis Jannicks Choice - Daylily

The Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Jannick's Choice' will seduce the abundance and brightness of its large flowers. With its stems laden with numerous and large flowers of a lemon yellow washed with green, warmed with gold at the throat, this tall and generous perennial constitutes a real focal point when planted in a large perennial border. This excellent variety, rare in cultivation, blooms over a long period, starting in early summer. Very floriferous, brilliant, full of life, this plant is also very easy to grow anywhere.

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Lily family or the hemerocallidaceae family according to classifications. These are perennial and hardy plants with deciduous foliage, sometimes semi-evergreen. The 'Jannick's Choice' variety is a recent cultivar, still difficult to find in commerce. The plant forms a fairly dense clump that will reach 90 cm (35in) in height when flowering, with a relative spread of 60 cm (24in). Hemerocallis tend to spread a little when they like the soil. The flowers measure about 12 cm (5in) in diameter, the petals in this variety are both thick and delicately wavy, wide, with slightly undulated edges. The colour is particularly bright: between lemon yellow and yellow-green, spotted with gold at the throat and barely marked with an almost white median line in the middle of the sepals. Each flower lasts little more than a day, but the flowering continues repeatedly over a beautiful period between mid-June and September. The stems are robust and adorned with numerous buds. The foliage is linear, narrow, deciduous in winter. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils, but are more opulent and floriferous in moist soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive both in shade and in the sun. Some of them are a little invasive, don't hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Hemerocallis is often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of its bright colours and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also because of its lack of modesty; it has a beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your borders. All summer bulb flowers (lilies, Crocosmia and Cannas...) can be planted alongside hemerocallis. 'Jannick's Choice' will be highlighted in a large perennial or annual border, associated with grasses, beautiful foliage such as fennel or lady's mantle, wildflowers such as ornamental carrots, asphodels, chamomile or Ammi visnaga that will not overshadow the beauty of its flowers. Pairing it with bright blue-flowered agapanthus (Midnight Blue, Agapanthus umbellatus) is always successful. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.
