Hemerocallis Study in Scarlet - Daylily

Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Study in Scarlet' is an early and very perpetual tetraploid variety. It offers an abundance of large sculptural, fleshy flowers with a bright red colour, enhanced by an aniseed-green throat, throughout the summer. Its foliage is evergreen. The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are  perennial and hardy plants whose foliage is deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen, or even evergreen in mild climates. The 'Study in Scarlet' variety is a horticultural creation introduced in 1985, rewarded in 1986 with an Honorable Mention in the USA. This perennial grows in a fairly dense clump that reaches a height of 55-60 cm (22-24 in), with a relative spread of 40 cm (16 in). Daylilies tend to spread a bit when they like the soil. The very large flowers measure about 12 cm (5 in) in diameter, and the petals in this variety are thick and velvety in appearance. Each flower lasts only one day, but flowering continues continuously for a beautiful period between June and September, with a plant producing 400 to 500 flowers in a season from the age of 3 years. In this variety, the foliage is fairly dark green, linear, and evergreen. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils, but they are more abundant and floriferous in moist soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive equally well in shade as in sun. Some of them can be a bit invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. The daylily is often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of its vibrant colours and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to its lack of modesty, as it is exuberant and goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your borders. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside daylilies. 'Study in Scarlet' will integrate perfectly into the composition of a red garden, along with Achillea 'Pomegranate' or an oriental lily like Lilium Red Twin. On a balcony or terrace, large pots of at least 30 cm (12 in) deep should be used, and dwarf varieties should be preferred. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.
