More information

Beautiful heuchera with highly frizzled ornamental foliage and changing colours: the young spring leaves are caramel-coloured with pink highlights and yellow edges when the summer foliage becomes a uniform apple green or chartreuse. The plant forms a small, rounded and compact clump and is adorned in early summer with slender stems carrying a light cream flowering. It is a sturdy variety that maintains a neat appearance throughout the year, to be planted in partial shade or in morning sun. An original heuchera to cultivate in the garden or in a pot. The plant is perfectly cold-resistant.

Description

The Heuchera 'Apple Twist' is a variety of Heuchera from the Dolce series, with highly undulating foliage. The plant forms a small, rounded and compact clump, with young leaves in spring that are bronze with a hint of pink and edged in yellow. In early summer, its very fringed leaves turn chartreuse green, accompanied by slender stems carrying a light and airy cream-white flowering. It is a vigorous variety, with a neat and dense habit all year round, and should be planted in partial shade or morning sun. A curious Heuchera with a lettuce-leaf appearance, suitable for cultivation in the garden or in a pot.

The Heuchera 'Apple Twist' belongs to the Saxifragaceae family. It is a horticultural hybrid from the Dolce series, known for its strong and dense hybrids, developed by Walter Gardens in the USA. The plant has a compact and rounded habit, reaching 30 cm (12in) in height (for the foliage) and about 45 cm (18in) in width within 4 to 5 years. Its foliage remains evergreen in winter, which is the major feature of this perennial: its apple green leaves with highly fringed edges bring life to the garden all year round. The light and airy flowering occurs in July. The bell-shaped flowers, cream-white when they first open and then turning white, are arranged along an upright stem. This plant has a shallow root system.

Make room for the Heuchera 'Apple Twist' on the terrace, balcony, and in the garden. Plant it in the ground in a border or shady rockery, where it's not too dry. For a striking contrast, pair it with a purple Heuchera. A variety such as 'Caribbean Sea', with red, caramel, or pink foliage, echoes its spring foliage, as does a Mukdenia rossii 'Karasuba'. Grasses and ferns bring a wild and romantic touch. It also makes a good companion for small bushes and bedding roses, when planted at their base. Lastly, it can be used as an original ground cover. Also pair this Heuchera with blue flowers, forget-me-nots, and Corydalis. A good cut flower, the delicate bells of this plant bring a lot of lightness to bouquets.

Planting and care

Choose a morning sun or partially shaded exposure for your Apple Twist heuchera. Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill in and place your seedling (after removing the pot) so that the top of the root ball of your plant is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. The addition of a slow-release fertiliser (dehydrated blood, horn powder) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate any air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your plant. Heucheras renew their foliage in late winter, so we recommend cutting back the leaves from the previous year in January or February.
