More information

A very robust variety with reliable growth, this hosta is covered with large and wide pointed foliage, which is a beautiful glossy green, very veined, carried by petioles speckled with red. In August, this hosta blooms with pretty mauve star-shaped bells. It tolerates all exposures except scorching sun. Planted in a raised pot, it allows you to admire the extent of its strengths and colours. Its spreading growth also makes it a good groundcover for borders or small flower beds.

Description

Hosta 'Red Dragon' is a variety of medium size, which is particularly robust and reliable. It is not lacking in ornamental value as it develops beautiful green foliage, very veined, undulating and arched, which is lanceolate in shape and quite wide, carried by petioles speckled with red up to the lamina. Its late summer flowering is attractive, in spikes adorned with mauve star-shaped flowers. It tolerates both sun and shade and looks impressive in a raised pot where you can admire its beautiful red stems.

Hosta or Funkia 'Red Dragon' is a plant belonging to the Asparagaceae family. This variety was obtained by R. Livingston. It is a deciduous perennial that is very hardy. It forms a medium-sized spreading clump from spring onwards. The plant, reaching maturity in 5 years, reaches 45 cm (18in) in height and 75 cm (30in) in width. Its leaves are lanceolate, quite wide, veined, undulating, measuring up to 32 cm (13in) in height and 14 cm (6in) in width. They are a beautiful, medium to dark green. Its petioles are tinged with red up to the lamina. The flowering takes place in August and September, in the form of elongated lavender-coloured bells. This perennial spreads by stolons, similar to strawberries. It is a long-lived plant.

Hostas are sensitive to drought and scorching exposure. However, this variety tolerates morning sun or filtered sunlight through foliage. On the edge of the undergrowth, sheltered from the wind, where the soil is deep and fertile, this Hosta 'Red Dragon' goes well with ferns, meadow rues, and Claytonia sibirica, with which it forms beautiful colorful duos that require little maintenance. It will also look good in the company of acteas with purple foliage and columbines. If you plant it in a sunnier spot, in consistently moist soil, it appreciates the company of foxgloves and Iris pseudacorus near a water source. All hostas grow well in pots and can remain in the same container for several years.

Most of the species commonly found in our gardens have been introduced from Japan. Edible, hostas are called 'urui' in Japan where they are commonly consumed.

Planting and care

Hostas can be planted in spring or autumn. Hostas prefer a deep, humus-rich, loose soil, which is preferably neutral to acidic and moist to wet throughout the year. Plant them in partial shade or partial shade and in a sheltered position away from strong winds.

Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix half compost with crumbled soil, partially backfill, and place your plant in a clump so that the top of the clump is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. The addition of a fertiliser (bonemeal) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Ensure that the collar is well above ground level. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to help the establishment of your plant. Also, water regularly in case of a dry summer.

With their preference for humid areas, slugs and snails never stray too far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker and tougher foliage, which is less appetising to slugs, these plants must be protected from gastropods. Protect your hostas by surrounding them with granules approved in organic agriculture, eggshells, coffee grounds, mulch, or any dry and rough natural substance that repels them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies in the fight against gastropods because, unlike chickens, they do not dig up the soil and do not attack the lush green shoots of young plants. Finally, some plants have a repellent odour for slugs, such as wormwood and garlic.
