Description

Kniphofia uvaria 'Nobilis' is a giant variety of Tritoma or Red Hot Poker with a flowering height that reaches head height, or even more. It is a lush perennial with a late and colourful flowering in shades of red, orange, and yellow. It forms a clump of ribbon-like, arching foliage that remains attractive in winter. A robust and very hardy plant that should be placed in full sun, in a light, well-drained soil. Its ornamental qualities and ease of cultivation have earned it the "gold medal" of the plant world awarded by the R.H.S. in England.

Kniphofia 'Nobilis', of uncertain origin, is probably derived from Kniphofia uvaria. This plant belongs to the Asphodelaceae or Xanthorrhoeaceae family, depending on the classification. It is a perennial with fleshy rhizomes native to the south and east of Africa, but it withstands our cold and humid winters very well. The 'Nobilis' cultivar forms an open clump, a bit tousled, composed of numerous green, ribbon-like, leathery leaves with parallel veins, evergreen in winter. The whole measures about 80-90 cm in all directions. Flowering takes place in August-September, depending on the climate. It rises well above the foliage on bare stems measuring 1.80 m to 2 m in height. The nectar-rich inflorescence resembles a torch or a firebrand. It is a dense terminal cluster filled with tubular and pendulous flowers, ranging in colour from reddish-orange to yellow, in a gradient from top to bottom of the spike. This 'Nobilis' variety is ahryd to to -15 °C and tolerates temporary droughts.

Their exotic appearance charmed our grandparents. Kniphofias or Red Hot Pokers are surprising plants, yet very sturdy, perfect candidates for cottage gardens and flower beds where they light up with colourful torches. Kniphofia 'Nobilis' adds a strongly exotic touch to any decor. It can be planted alone on a lawn, amidst lower plants such as Variegated Greater Periwinkle (Vinca major 'Variegata'). Red Hot Pokers go well with grasses such as Pennisetum or Panicum. They can also be planted along a pathway, mixing colours, or combined with hardy Agapanthus to create an exotic atmosphere.

Planting and care

With good hardiness in well-drained soil, Kniphofia uvaria 'Nobilis' should be planted in a sunny location with a soil that is both rich and light, loamy or sandy and humus-bearing. This plant prefers slightly moist soil from spring to autumn, but can tolerate moderate periods of drought in summer.

Ensure that it does not lack water too much in summer, as this is when it needs it the most. To protect during a particularly cold winter, a thick mulch can be installed around the crown. This plant tolerates wind and the specific conditions of coastal areas. Apply organic fertiliser at the start of vegetation. Remove wilted stems and flowers in late autumn. Tritoma does not require any other care.
