Description

Depending on their origin, evening primroses have different requirements.

Beautiful variety with a taproot, producing an upright and straight stem, reddish-brown in color, woody at the base, bearing long and narrow leaves, coarsely toothed, of a beautiful shiny dark green. The flowers, a unique coral red, resemble those of an abutilon. They appear solitary in the axil of each leaf as the stem elongates. They continue to appear from July until the frost. This generous plant sometimes exhausts itself by flowering and the stump dies prematurely if it hasn't had time to produce a new leaf rosette at the base.

Planting and care

The plants we offer are more suitable for cool to damp, yet porous, areas. Heavy and compact clay soils may be suitable, provided the structure is improved by mixing gravel into the soil to a depth of about 40cm (16in). If you take care to cut the stems after flowering, the plant will produce new rosette foliage close to the ground, covering the soil well until the frosts arrive. However, this short life is largely compensated by abundant spontaneous sowings in any rich, yet stony or sandy soil, surfaced with gravel in which the seeds find the ideal sowing medium. We have planted it in a scree garden alongside salvias and the Mertensia simplissicima with blue foliage: guaranteed contrast!
