Value-for-money
This brilliant ground cover is an ideal and versatile ally for vegetating the ungrateful spaces neglected by other perennials. Its evergreen foliage, with a very shiny green colour, carpets the soil in shade or partial shade and limits the proliferation of adventives. Hardy, preferring moist soil but also tolerant of drought, it brings brightness to the forgotten corners under trees, hedges, and borders of flower beds.

Description

Pachysandra terminalis 'Green Sheen', also known as the Japanese Spurge, is a hardy perennial with evergreen foliage that is particularly glossy and punctuated by a discreet white flowering. Preferring shaded situations, it is the ideal companion for trees and hedges, as it covers the ground with brilliance throughout the year. An accommodating ground cover, it prefers moist soil, but can also tolerate occasional periods of drought.

Originating from Japan, this subshrub classified as a perennial plant belongs to the Buxaceae family, making it a cousin of the boxwood. It shares the interesting characteristic of evergreen leaves. Those of 'Green Sheen' are, moreover, very glossy and bring light to shaded areas. Oval in shape, they are tough, slightly dentate at the ends, and clustered in bunches on short branches. The plant does not exceed 20cm (8in) in height. It takes its time to establish itself, but then spreads to a minimum span of 40cm (16in). A discreet white flowering appears in early summer and punctuates the foliage with small spikes barely a few centimetres long. Easy to care for, Pachysandra terminalis appreciates fresh, rich, and light soils. However, it is not demanding and can tolerate heavy and sometimes slightly dry substrates (once established).

Pachysandra terminalis 'Green Sheen' is essential in all gardens that hide some poorly exposed corners or simply under shrubs and at the base of walls. It keeps company with Hellebores, Hostas, and forms a beautiful ribbon of varied foliage with Heucheras and perennial Geraniums on the edge of the flower bed. Its shimmering foliage brings forgotten spaces back to life all year round.
