Description

The Mossy Saxifrages or Saxifraga from this collection are captivating due to the diversity of their colours and their ease of cultivation. Among them are the excellent varieties of Saxifraga 'Ware's Crimson', 'Peter Pan', and 'Purpurteppich'. All of these plants offer a generous flowering period between April and May and July, depending on the climate. They form small cushion-like clumps, and their evergreen foliage is also an asset during winter. Resistant to temperatures as low as -15°C, these plants particularly thrive in partially shaded and slightly moist rockeries.

The collection consists of:

1 x Mossy Saxifrage 'Ware's Crimson': This variety stands out with its colour-changing flowers ranging from bright red to purplish pink and white. It reaches a height of approximately 10 cm.

1 x Mossy Saxifrage 'Peter Pan': With its dark red flowers that fade to a pale pink, this plant adds a touch of purity to the garden. It can reach a height of 8 to 10 cm.

1 x Mossy Saxifrage 'Purpurteppich': With flowers in shades of purple, this variety grows to a height of 10 to 15 cm.

The ideal planting period for these Mossy Saxifrages is early spring, in March. They can be used in rockeries, as ground cover, to border a gravel path, or even in pots. Well-drained, light soil where water does not stagnate is essential. They will not thrive in very dry soils or under scorching sun. Place 'Purpurteppich', which is slightly taller, at the back of your composition. Plan for 9 to 12 plants per square metre, with a distance of 20 to 30 cm between each plant.

The Mossy Saxifrages from this collection pair well with the 'Palace Purple' Heuchera with its magnificent purple foliage. The 'Rozanne' Geranium with its long-lasting blue flowering will also complement the colour palette very well. Place it behind the saxifrages. Finally, to add variety to the textures, mix in the small fern 'Crispa' Scaly Male Fern in your composition.

Planting and care

Plant Saxifraga in permeable and humus-bearing soil, neutral or chalky, and above all well-drained (no stagnant water). In heavy soil, adding compost or potting soil is beneficial. This plant prefers a semi-shaded exposure, it is sensitive to arid and scorching conditions. It requires little maintenance, faded flowers can be removed after flowering for a cleaner look. It is best to plant this small perennial in March.
