Description

Verbascum Helen Johnson, or Mullein, is a cross between Verbascum phoeniceum and Verbascum bombyciferum. It forms a rosette and has an upright stem which is thinner at the top. This tall stem, 15 to 45 cm (6 to 18in) long, bears numerous orange-copper flowers with a purple centre from June to September. These flowers are cup-shaped, with a diameter of 1 to 3 cm (0 to 1in).

The leaves of the Mullein are evergreen, 10 to 20 cm (4 to 8in) long, ovate and silvery green. At maturity, the plant can reach 90 cm (35in) high. Also known as Mullein, it is very hardy but has a relatively short lifespan. However, it self-seeds very well, just like Foxgloves.

This plant is attractive to bees and other insects and is interesting in mixed borders and cottage gardens. It goes well with other summer-flowering perennials or biennials and makes a good border plant.
