I received a plant whose stems are almost at a 45° angle with the roots, which means that when planting the rose with the roots vertically, the rose is lying down. I'm really disappointed, I would never have bought such a plant from a garden centre. I contacted customer service and they replied, "Don't worry, your rose is of good quality, you just need to plant it slightly at an angle in your flower bed and it will straighten up on its own.

Description

The 'Swany' Rose, classified as a landscape rose, is an excellent rose capable of forming a magnificent ground cover due to its low, very dense, more or less climbing or trailing habit. Its shiny dark green foliage serves as a backdrop for many small, flat, double-white roses that bloom in large clusters from the beginning to the end of summer. Not demanding, vigorous, floriferous, and disease-free, it even blooms in partial shade, and it knows how to make itself indispensable in the garden, flooding borders, flower beds, or even a large pot on the terrace. It is superb in a small hedge.

The 'Swany' Rose or 'Meiburenac', obtained in 1978 by the rose breeder Meilland, is classified in the modern shrub and landscape roses category. Its clustered flowers come from the polyantha rose, an old hybrid resulting from Rosa multiflora and Rosa chinensis. The plant forms a very dense bush 50 to 90 cm (20 to 35in) tall, spreading and trailing about 80 cm (32in) to 1 m (3ft) wide, depending on the growing conditions. Very floriferous, it produces from June to September, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed, an abundance of flowers with up to 39 petals in open and flat cups, measuring 3 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, pure white, surrounding a golden yellow stamen heart. Their fragrance is light, perhaps more intense in hot climates. They are gathered in generous clusters of 10 to 15. Its deciduous foliage, rarely affected by disease, comprises small, shiny, dark green leaves covering long, thorny stems.

The 'Swany' Rose is used in flower beds, borders, large spaces, slopes, or low hedges. It adapts to all soils that are not too wet and all climates, allowing it to be planted anywhere. It has long trailing branches that work wonders on a slope, covering the ground. Planted in masses, it will also edge pathways and highlight flower beds. For example, it can be paired with perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, lavenders, snapdragons, foxgloves, or other Stachys. Left to grow freely, it will form a bush with a vague, blooming, and cloudy shape, with a very natural appearance in front of a flower shrub bed composed of abelias, Kolwitzia, mock oranges, elderberries, or shrubby wormwoods.

Planting and care

If you want to grow roses, here's what you need to know. They grow best in sunny spots but also need protection from strong midday rays and winds. The soil should be well-cultivated and rich in humus, and it's best if it's slightly acidic. 'Swany' roses can handle partial shade, but they still prefer a sunny spot.

When planting in a pot, dig a 25 cubic cm hole and add blood, fish and bone at the bottom. Remove the rose from its pot, position it in the hole, and cover the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1 in) of soil. Fill the hole and water generously to eliminate air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks during dry weather to help the roots grow. Use special rose fertiliser to promote flowering.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
