Description

Rosa Patte de Velours is a shrub rose whose stems are almost thornless. This unique pretty creation from Meilland, also has plentiful and continuous flowering with a beautiful two-tone effect. This small bush carries a multitude of charming, double, cream-coloured flowers with a bright pink border, whose shades evolve as they bloom. Its beautiful bright green foliage, vigour, and graceful habit also work well as ground cover, in flowerbeds, and small flowering hedges. This attractive variety requires little maintenance, is disease resistant and only needs pruning every 3 years!

Rosa Patte de Velours was obtained in 1999 by Meilland. With a very flexible bushy habit, it will reach an average of 80 cm (32in) in all directions (up to 1.20 m (4ft)), which allows it to fit in small spaces. Its flowering is particularly abundant and regular from June to October-November, as long as the soil remains moist. Its 5-6 cm (2in) wide roses are gathered in generous clusters with purplish stems. They are semi-double to double, with slightly flattened, cream-coloured cups strongly edged with bright pink, a shade that fades as they fully bloom, offering a lovely mix of pink and white. The almost thornless stems are adorned with deciduous, healthy foliage divided into vibrant green leaflets with a satin finish.

Floribunda roses can be planted as beautiful small hedges, mixed along the terrace or in flowerbeds with small shrubs. Combine them with abelias, nandinas, deciduous pink or blue ceanothus, or caryopteris, for example. They are good companions for peonies, paniculate phlox, and tall baby's breath. Patte de Velours, with its almost thornless growth, is perfect for high-traffic areas. Its modest size and natural appearance allow it to fit well in all gardens, even small ones. Its uses are varied, you can plant it in a rose bed, as a ground cover, mixed with white varieties (Marie Pavie, Swanny), pink, red, or mauve (Blue Boy, Rhapsody in Blue, Love Song), or combined with easy-care plants like perennial geraniums Rozanne, small-flowered carnations, perennial salvias, or white, pink, or blue asters.

Planting and care

Plant this rose from November to March, in well-prepared and well-drained ordinary soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, heavy rather than light. In too sandy, compact, or dry soil in summer, it is best to add compost or well-decomposed manure at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose doesn't like waterlogged soils in winter. Plant it in a sunny location, preferably with some shade. Roses are hungry plants, a specific rose fertiliser will be beneficial at the start of growth, and regularly throughout flowering. To encourage reblooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, prune the stems by about a quarter of their length (from 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) in late winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud to promote bushy growth and prevent the branches from becoming tangled in the centre.

Roses are often spotted or unsightly in late summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose, it is a natural phenomenon.

Care

Pruning instructions Pruning is not essential for this variety. However, it is a good idea to prune the stems to about a quarter of their length (from 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter every 3 years. Always prune above an outward-facing bud to encourage bushy growth and prevent branches from tangling in the centre of the shrub.
