Description

The Mister Lincoln Standard Rose showcases a classic among varieties with large red flowers. Adorned with numerous qualities, this rose is vigorous, repeat flowering and easy to cultivate. Its large velvet crimson roses that release an intense fragrance bloom on beautiful dark green foliage. With its neat silhouette of a small tree, it will be perfect as a specimen on a lawn, in the centre of a flowerbed, or in a large pot on the patio. Its roses hold up well in the rain, as well as in a vase.

Standard roses are obtained by grafting a variety (here the Mister Lincoln bush rose) onto a single and upright stem belonging to a different rose (Rosa canina, R. laxa, or R. multiflora), with the graft being made at a certain height, here at 90 - 100 cm (35 - 39in) from the ground. In very cold regions, it may be useful to protect the rootstock in winter.

The Mister Lincoln Rose belongs to the complex family of modern Hybrid Teas, also known as large-flowered roses. It is an American creation dating back to 1964 (Swim & Weeks), rewarded numerous times internationally. It is a shrub rose with excellent vigour. Grafted as a standard rose, it shows a characteristic habit, with a slender and vertical 'trunk' with a semi-rounded crown. The young shoots and leaves of this variety are a coppery red shade. The adult foliage is dark green, matte, and less susceptible to diseases. However, it can be sensitive to black spot disease in humid and confined situations. The colour of the foliage perfectly enhances that of the flowers. This rose blooms from June to October, abundantly and regularly as long as it is not lacking in water or nutrients. Its large 14 cm (6in) diameter roses are mostly solitary, carried by long and sturdy thorny stems. Each one is composed of 30 to 40 velvety-textured petals in a red-purple colour. Their fragrance, sweet and spicy, is similar to the Damask roses.

This Mister Lincoln Standard Rose, with its elegant habit, sumptuous roses, and sweet fragrance, is ideal in the centre of a bed of light perennials, along a walkway, near the patio, as a specimen in a well-groomed small garden, or in a large pot on the balcony. Its red colour is easy to match with all sorts of flowers in the garden. For example, penstemons, chamomiles, perennial salvias, catmints, or tall baby's breath can be planted alongside it to lighten its sometimes perceived artificial appearance. A groundcover composed of silver mound or lady's mantle will perfectly enhance it. Its cut flowers, with good durability, are perfect in bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant your Mister Lincoln Standard Rose in a sunny or lightly shaded position. Modern roses are tolerant but do not appreciate excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well cultivated, not too heavy, and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose bush, work the soil by crumbling it and put an amendment, such as bonemeal, at the bottom of the planting hole. Water generously after planting to eliminate air pockets. Regularly water for a few weeks to encourage root development.

In regions with very cold winters, it is advisable to protect the graft of standard roses (the 'trunk') by surrounding it with a thick winter cover.

Pruning modern repeat flowering roses is essential for flowering. It can be carried out in three steps:

1. Maintenance pruning: regularly shorten the flowering branches throughout the season. To encourage the reblooming of repeat flowering roses, remove faded flowers along with their stem and two or three leaves.

2. Preparatory pruning in autumn: light pruning that anticipates the true spring pruning. It is not recommended in regions with cold winters to avoid weakening the bush.

3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have become shoots 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, prune the young strong branches to one-quarter of their length.

Pruning always aims to clear the heart of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous branches will be kept, usually three to six well-positioned branches to maintain a beautiful habit. Always prune at a slant about ½ cm or 1 cm (0.5in) above a bud facing outward.
