Description

The Fellowship Harwelcome Standard Rose is vigorous, incredibly floriferous, and highly disease-resistant. It produces large flowers of a truly bright orange that takes on pink and golden tones, revealing a late golden yellow heart. They form a beautiful combination with the abundant foliage, which is a beautiful dark green colour and not very susceptible to diseases. A flamboyant and distinguished plant of great decorative value, it can be placed prominently in the garden or even in a large pot on the patio.

Standard roses are obtained by grafting a variety (here the Fellowship shrub rose) onto a single, upright stem belonging to a different rose (Rosa canina, R. laxa, or R. multiflora), with the graft being done at the top. In very cold regions, it may be useful to protect the rootstock in winter.

The Fellowship Harwelcome Standard Rose is an excellent English creation by Harkness, dating back to 1992. This variety belongs to the floribunda rose family, which produces flowers clustered in clusters. Grafted as a standard, it has a characteristic habit, with a slender, vertical 'trunk' carrying a large rounded crown. Its thorny stems bear glossy, abundant foliage, divided into small, tough, and toothed leaflets. The young shoots are red to bronze in colour. Its flowering is abundant and regular from June until October-November if it is regularly pruned and provided with enough water. The flowers are gathered in clusters of 3 to 5 units, and they are 9-10 cm (4in) wide, with undulating petals. The tightly closed buds are red and open into open cups, revealing a small yellow stamen heart. The fragrance of this rose is light. The plant is deciduous in winter.

This Fellowship Standard Rose is an exceptional specimen, to be placed in the centre of a bed of delicate perennials, along a pathway, near the patio, as a specimen in a well-maintained small garden, or in a large pot on the balcony. Its mandarin orange colour is visible from afar in the garden and pairs well with white, orange, blue, or yellow flowers. For example, nepetas, chamomiles, perennial salvias, foxgloves, love-in-a-mist, or baby's breath can be planted alongside it. A groundcover of silver baskets or lady's mantle will showcase it perfectly.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Fellowship' Rose from November to March, in ordinary, well-tilled and drained soil. Roses prefer clay soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is preferable to bury compost, decomposed manure or humus at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dislikes waterlogged soils in winter. Plant it in a sunny location, if possible in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific fertiliser will be beneficial at the start of vegetation, and regularly throughout flowering. To encourage new growth, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, prune the stems to about a quarter of their length (from 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the branches.

In regions with very cold winters, it is advisable to protect the rose stem graft (the 'trunk') by wrapping it with a thick winter veil.
