Juniperus horizontalis Andorra Compact

Juniperus horizontalis 'Andorra Compact' is a variety of horizontal juniper that stands out for its fine and feathery foliage with changing colours. Under the effect of winter cold, it takes on decorative shades of purple to violet. Like other varieties, its low and dense growth spreads widely on the ground. It is therefore a very good ground cover plant to occupy a slope or dress up a rockery. Very hardy, this conifer appreciates neutral to limestone soil, even poor or sandy, as long as it is well-drained. Loving full sun, it also grows in partial shade and is easy to cultivate.

Juniperus horizontalis is a prostrate evergreen conifer that belongs to the Cupressaceae family. This family includes other common species, such as cypresses, arborvitaes, and false cypresses, or less known ones, such as the majestic South American Fitzroya or the Australian Callitris. This horizontal juniper is native to the northern regions of North America, which explains its excellent hardiness (-25° C to -30° C (-13° F to -22° F)). In its natural environment, it has a prostrate and spreading habit, reaching a thickness of 45 cm (17.7 in) and a spread of 2 m to 4 m (6.6 ft o 13.1 ft). This species appreciates cool climates, poor, sandy and/or limestone soils, and is not afraid of arid conditions.

'Andorra Compact' is native to North America. Slow-growing, it will mature into a low bush with a very spreading habit, measuring 40 cm to 50 cm (15.7 in to 19.7 in) in height and 1.4 m to 2 m (4.6 ft to 6.6 ft) in spread. The very tight branches open from the centre to the periphery like a fountain. Its very fine foliage has a pleasant feathery feel. It is light green during the growing season, turning violet in winter. Very hardy, it withstands drought once well established. It is therefore a particularly easy plant to cultivate and highly recommended for beginners. 

'Andorra Compact' is a small, robust, and undemanding conifer that will be perfect for covering a slope or spreading between rocks in a sunny rockery. Its limited growth and relatively slow growth rate also allow it to be grown in a large container to decorate a terrace. Its resistance to drought once well established allows it to be planted in a Mediterranean garden. Due to its minimalist aesthetic, it will suit a contemporary garden with geometric lines or a minimalist garden. Paired with a 'Forest Pansy' Judas tree, which is also lime-tolerant, it will create a contrasting scene with great effect. The feathery foliage of the juniper will contrast with the heart-shaped leaves, and the green and purple will play a beautiful colourful tune. Cercis canadensis 'Hearts of Gold' with yellow leaves will also create a nice contrast in its vicinity. To maintain these foliage variations throughout the year, plant other evergreen shrubs with light or variegated foliage, such as the delightful Ceanothus 'Cool Blue' with its green foliage marginated with cream white.
