Pinus mugo Mops Gold - Dwarf Mountain Pine

Pinus mugo 'Mops Gold' is a small mountain pine with a globose and dense habit. Its short needles are very numerous and, as they undulate slightly in length, they give a friendly tousled look to this dwarf conifer. Their golden hue further enhances the attractive graphic habit of this miniature shrub. Due to its reduced size and slow growth, it is well suited to a small garden. Planted in a rock garden, it will bring an original touch of brightness and can also enhance a terrace if planted in a decorative container. It is an extremely hardy conifer, truly undemanding, and does not require pruning. It thrives in ordinary soil and a sunny exposure. 

Pinus mugo, also known as the Dwarf Mountain Pine or Mountain Pine Tree, is an evergreen conifer of the Pinaceae family endemic to the mountains of Europe. It can be found at the subalpine level, avoiding the summer heat, from the Spanish sierras, through the high Alpine and Pyrenean massifs, to the Balkans. It only descends to an altitude of 200m (656ft) in Central Europe. In the wild, it slowly reaches 3 to 4 metres (10 to 13 feet) in all directions, adopting a wind-swept silhouette. It is a very hardy species, well adapted to mountain climates.

The 'Mops Gold' variety is a golden mutation of the 'Mops variety' well known to rock garden enthusiasts. It differs from the wild species by its reduced size and very compact, fairly regular spherical habit. It has slow growth, so that a 25-year-old specimen will not exceed 80cm (32in) in diameter. Over time, this shrub widens to eventually form a rounded small pine, slightly wider than tall, measuring 1m (3ft) in height and 1.20m (4ft) in diameter. Its small, tightly packed branches are covered with fine needles, about 4 to 5 cm (2in) in length. Arranged in pairs and clustered around the branches, they have a beautiful golden colour that easily distinguishes this conifer. The young shoots emerge in spring from light brown, resinous buds. The bark on its trunk is brownish-grey, while it appears green and shiny, then black, on the branches.

This pine grows in most soils, even limestone ones, provided they are well-drained. Extremely hardy (down to -25°C or -30°C), it is not afraid of wind, but does not tolerate excessively dry conditions.

The dwarf Mountain Pine 'Mops Gold' will find its place in any garden, even the smallest ones. It can be planted as a specimen, in a mass planting, or in a rock garden. It can also be used in a large pot on the terrace or balcony. It works wonders in a Japanese garden and pairs well with large stones, geometric lines of pools, and masonry structures. It can be combined with other colourful dwarf conifers, such as the Juniperus horizontalis 'Blue Chip', a creeping juniper with beautiful grey-blue foliage that contrasts well with the yellow of our small pine. The sculptural Himalayan Cedar 'Feeling Blue', a dwarf form with trailing branches and green-blue foliage, will also be a great companion.

The graphic qualities of conifers naturally impose themselves in the design of a contemporary garden, which prefers the aesthetics of shapes, silhouettes, and textures over the whimsy of blooms. These plants, with their reassuring permanence, provide lasting structure to a bed, mark pathways, and line terraces, easily replacing the strong presence of trimmed boxwood or holly. The key is to play with volumes and colours.
