Description
The Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Rotfuchs' is a variety of Bush with black-purple foliage that turns purple-green at maturity. It has a scent of gingerbread and caramel, although less intense than the typical species.

Originating from Japan and China, this Hardy bush reaches a height of 4-5m (13ft - 16ft) and has an upright habit. It grows very slowly and forms a single trunk. Its Deciduous leaves are opposite, ovate, and 8cm (3.1in) long. They emerge purple and lighten as they mature. At this stage, they emit a mixed scent of gingerbread and caramel, hence its vernacular name "caramel tree".
The Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Rotfuchs' thrives in rich, deep, moist, humus-bearing soil, preferably acidic, in a sunny or partly shaded location. It requires little maintenance, just be cautious of spring frosts that can damage the young foliage. It is naturally resistant to diseases and parasites.
The Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Rotfuchs' can be used as a solitary plant, in the understory, or as a border around a water feature. Pairing it with Cornus, Nyssa, Amelanchier, Euonymus europaeus, and Liquidambar creates a grove with stunning autumn hues.

Planting and care
The Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Rotfuchs' is best planted in autumn, in rich, deep, moist, humus-bearing, acidic soil in a sunny or semi-shaded position. Deep digging is recommended before planting. Water and mulch to maintain soil moisture. Prune in February to remove diseased or dead branches. It requires little maintenance, just be careful of spring frosts that can damage young foliage. It is naturally resistant to diseases and parasites.
