Description

Chaenomeles x superba 'Pink Lady' is a decorative bush with a spreading habit that flowers profusely. From March to April, it produces clusters of early flowers before the foliage appears. The 4cm (2in) wide cup-shaped flowers are bright pink in colour. The flowering occurs on thorny branches and is honey-scented

In autumn, the flowers are followed by decorative globose fruits that are fragrant. The fruits are yellow-green and remain on the bush after the leaves have fallen. The foliage of this flowering quince is deciduous and forms a tuft. The 6cm (2 in) long leaves are medium green and shiny on the upper side.

This vigorous bush can reach a height of 1.5m (5ft) and is very hardy. It can be grown both in borders and as a standalone plant. It also makes a beautiful low hedge. Chaenomeles x superba 'Pink Lady' is a hybrid of Chaenomeles japonica and Chaenomeles speciosa.

Planting and care

Chaenomeles x superba 'Pink Lady' thrives in the sun. You can also grow it in partial shade. Plant it in ordinary, rather moist but well-drained soil. It is a very easy plant to grow that tolerates limestone. When planting, mix your soil with compost. When grown as a hedge, space the plants 80cm (32in) apart. In a flower bed, the plants should be spaced 40 to 60cm (16 to 24in) apart. This Japanese quince tree withstands pollution well. It also requires little watering as it is drought-resistant.
