Description

The Forsythia (x) intermedia Mindor is a variety of Paris Mimosa interesting for its compact habit adapted to small gardens, but also for its rather late but long-lasting spring flowering. Its still naked branches are covered with sulphur-yellow flowers for three to four weeks in April, while most other forsythias have already finished flowering. Wonderful in the garden, its sunny flowering will also be very pretty in vases for spring bouquets. A generous, easy and non-intrusive Paris Mimosa that will create a sensation in all gardens!

The Forsythia (x) intermedia Mindor ® is a deciduous bush belonging to the oleaceae family. It is descended from a spontaneous hybrid resulting from two species native to China, the Forsythia suspensa and the F. viridissimaIt will reach 1.50 m (4 ft 11 in) in all directions within 10 years, showing from the start a regular, well-rounded, well-branched, and dense habit. Like other forsythias, it provides a true spring spectacle in March-April depending on the climate, before the appearance of its foliage. But its one-year-old and older branches are particularly floriferous; they produce numerous bell-shaped flowers grouped in small bouquets for several weeks. Each flower has 4 petals and stamens of a light and vibrant yellow around a slightly golden throat. The flowering is followed by the appearance of the foliage. The leaves of this variety are a dark green shade from spring to summer, before turning orange and violet in autumn. They are long, pointed leaves measuring 8 to 10 cm (3.1 to 3.9 in) in length, with dentate margins.

The Forsythia Mindor is perfectly hardy, undemanding and very easy to maintain, it grows in any type of sufficiently deep soil and under most of our climates. This modest-sized but particularly floriferous variety finds its place in gardens of all sizes. It can be planted in a large shrub border or in a flowering hedge, alongside Japanese quinces, Japanese corals (Kerria japonica), Cotinus (Cotinus coggygria Lilla) or even with evergreen mahonias, ceanothus, mock oranges, Berberis and many others according to each gardener's taste. In early December, cut a branch or two and put them in a vase, they will flower for Christmas.

Planting and care

The Forsythia intermedia Mindor enjoys a sunny exposure but tolerates partial shade (especially in our hottest and sunniest regions). Place it in any ordinary soil, even clay or limestone, deep enough and loosened, enriched with compost at planting. After flowering, optionally remove half or two-thirds of the height of the flowering branches to rejuvenate the bush and ensure a quality flowering the following spring. During the first 3 years, a simple cleaning of dead, thin or misplaced stems will be sufficient.
