Description

The Fraxinus angustifolia Raywood or Small-leaved Ash is a tree that has a very beautiful dark green foliage that turns lovely shades of red and copper in autumn.

A particularly healthy tree, the Fraxinus angustifolia Raywood has been replacing some of the plane trees used in urban areas in recent years. It is starting to gain popularity in gardens because its foliage and elegant habit give it genuine decorative qualities.

Like other ashes, the Fraxinus 'Raywood' is a large tree, easily reaching 15 to 20m (49 ft to 65 ft) in height and 10 to 12m in width. Its elegantly rounded crown withstands the wind without any problem. Perfectly hardy, it has limited requirements and can tolerate any type of exposure and soil, including limestone soils.

Easy to grow, the Fraxinus angustifolia Raywood will find its place in a spacious garden, providing you with a pleasant shade in summer. To enhance this little corner of shade, consider planting some bulbs for spring and/or some shade-loving perennials for summer.

Planting and care

Plant your Fraxinus angustifolia Raywood in autumn or spring, choose a location where the soil is deep and keep in mind the space it will take in the long run. If necessary, create a drainage pit with gravel if your soil is heavy. Maintain regular watering during the summer following planting and ensure it is protected from prolonged droughts for another year, a layer of mulch can help maintain moisture at the base and reduce the need for watering. Pruning involves balancing the habit of the tree by thinning out the center of the canopy every 3 years or so.
