Description

Hypericum x inodorum Miracle Pistache 'Allpista', like most shrub St. John's worts, is a very rewarding, undemanding plant, resistant to diseases and easy to succeed with. This one naturally forms a dense bush, decorative from summer to autumn. Its very vibrant green foliage forms a beautiful backdrop for its long-lasting bright yellow summer flowering. Then come numerous decorative fruits, which are globose in shape, with a pistachio-green colour. This St. John's wort can be planted in flower beds, rockeries, borders, or even in a container on a patio, preferably in partial shade.

'Allpista' is part of a new generation of compact hybrids, which are resistant to rust disease that affects many shrub St. John's worts in humid climates, especially those derived from the species Hypericum inodorum, native to the Island of Madeira. The Miracle Series hypericums produce decorative berries of varying size and colour. These small shrubs bloom abundantly from the first year in the garden and bear fruit generously and regularly. All these plants belong to the Hypericaceae family.

Miracle Pistache 'Allpista' grows rapidly. It will not exceed 80cm (32in) in all directions. It has a bushy and dense habit, well-branched vegetation, and bears more or less evergreen leaves in winter. They are oval-shaped, leathery, without petioles, and vibrant green. It blooms all summer, from June-July to August-September. The flowers are produced in clusters of small flowers measuring 2 to 3cm (1in) in diameter. They consist of 5 round, golden yellow petals arranged in an open cup. The centre of the flower is occupied by a crown of prominent, fairly long stamens. Another asset of this variety is its abundant and decorative fruiting. The berries are round, of good size, and shiny green.

St. John's worts are appreciated for their very long flowering period and their real ease of cultivation in all types of soil and in all climates, even by the sea and even in the shade. Miracle Pistache 'Allpista' is an ideal choice for a new garden, even for novice gardeners. It excels in low shrub beds or perennial beds, but also planted in a large pot on a patio or balcony. For example, it can be planted with purple foliage plants (physocarpus, berberis). Play with complementary colours by choosing the red of shrub salvias or the orange of geums or agastaches. Surround your beds composed of these plants with euphorbias and lady's mantles, which have very attractive foliage. Its summer yellow flowering will not compete with the more pastel spring blooms. Its long-lasting flowers, as well as its branches loaded with green beads, can be used to create original bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant in a sunny location in cool climates, or in partial shade and full shade in a warm climate, sheltered from the wind. Its foliage can be damaged by too much intense sunlight. This St. John's wort adapts to almost all soils, as long as they are well prepared and well-drained. The soil pH is not too important, but it should not be excessively acidic or excessively chalky. It needs light soil, deep enough to allow it to better withstand dry summers. It is very hardy, not very susceptible to diseases, and its enemies are rare. Perform pruning in late winter to prevent the bush from becoming sparse in the centre. This variety is resistant to rust.
