Description
Magnolia laevifolia ‘Miniatura’®, formerly known as Michelia yunnanensis, is a small evergreen shrub with delicately fragrant cream-white flowering. Compact and bushy, it is perfectly suited to small sheltered gardens and container growing. Its elegant foliage highlights an abundant spring flowering, sometimes followed by a repeat bloom in summer. It thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and prefers a position sheltered from wind and hard frosts. A small botanical wonder for magnolia enthusiasts… even without a garden!
Magnolia ‘Miniatura’® is a dwarf cultivar derived from Magnolia laevifolia, an evergreen shrub species of the Magnoliaceae family. Native to the mountains of southwestern China, this species is adapted to cool, slightly humid climates, but its frost resistance is limited. This 'Miniatura' cultivar is distinguished by its modest growth; it forms a small, dense, branching shrub with a compact, rounded habit. The plant reaches between 1 m and 1.50 m in height and 70 cm to 1 m in spread at maturity. Its growth is slow to moderate, around 20 to 30 cm per year. Its ornamental evergreen foliage consists of oval to elliptical, deep dark green leaves, glossy on top, felted with reddish-brown underneath. The young twigs and flower buds are also covered with a fine brown down. Magnolia ‘Miniatura’® begins flowering in April-May with small cream-white flowers shaped like starry cups, 3 to 6 cm in diameter. These delicate flowers, produced in abundance, are softly fragrant, with a subtle, sweet and fresh scent, very pleasant in the garden. A second , more discreet and sporadic flowering may appear in July or August, especially if the plant enjoys warm, sunny conditions.
Magnolia laevifolia ‘Miniatura’® is an excellent choice for a container on a terrace, in a town garden, or even in a low hedge combined with other flowering evergreen shrubs. Pair it also with pink or white flowering hellebores or with evergreen groundcovers such as lesser periwinkles or Liriope. It will accompany all acidic soil shrubs (Dwarf Rhododendrons, Japanese Azaleas, Hydrangea macrophylla...), Fuchsia magellanica, Japanese Anemones or lilies.

Magnolia Achteraan prefers humus-bearing, slightly acidic (pH 6.5) soils, rich in organic matter, moist but without stagnant water. It enjoys partial shade and dislikes scorching exposures. It can only be grown in the ground in regions with mild climates, as its hardiness does not exceed -8°C even if planted in a very sheltered position.
Nevertheless, it can regrow from the stump if well protected, when the aerial parts have been destroyed. Mulch the base to retain moisture in hot climates, and water thoroughly every fortnight in prolonged drought (avoid hard tap water). This shrub does not tolerate transplanting well once established, so choose its location carefully.
Its appearance and growth will be very different depending on whether it is planted in the ground or in a container, and whether it grows in the shade or the sun. When it develops in shade, its habit is more open and flexible, its foliage darker. If, on the other hand, it is exposed to the sun, it will have a more compact habit, with denser, smaller and lighter green foliage. When grown in a large container, its development is limited. Watering must then be consistent in summer, and very reduced in winter: in a cold greenhouse or conservatory, only watering (with not too much hard water) when the substrate is dry on the top 1 cm. The shrub can be easily pruned after flowering. At the end of winter, before growth resumes, remove dead wood and entangled shoots to keep only the vigorous branches and maintain a nice habit.
