Description

Narcissus with small clusters of flowers in golden yellow. Late flowering. The stems each bear 2 to 6 flowers.

Narcissus are the most resilient bulbs planted in autumn and will thrive both in full sun and partial shade. They prefer well-drained soil but also thrive in heavy soil.

For bouquets: We advise against mixing narcissus with other flowers, especially tulips, as the stems of narcissus contain a substance that quickly wilts other flowers. This detrimental effect on other flower species can be mitigated by dipping the ends of the narcissus stems in hot water for 1 to 2 minutes.

Narcissus come back every year. Unlike perennial plants, it is unnecessary to feed before flowering. Only cut the leaves when they have turned yellow and apply fertiliser at this time, this is when the bulb replenishes itself and prepares flowers for the following year.

Planting and care

Daffodils bloom from March to May and come back every year. They are easy to grow and will thrive both in the shade of a wood and a sunny flowerbed. Plant them 10 cm (4in) deep and 10 cm (4in) apart, in sets of at least 5 bulbs, in uniform or mixed colours. To plant them in a lawn: lift a patch of turf, dig and loosen the soil to a depth of at least 20 cm (8in) (the length of a spade), place your bulbs, cover them with soil and replace the turf. Choose a spot where you won't mow, as you must let daffodil leaves wither before cutting them. It is at this time that the bulb regenerates and prepares the flowers for the following year. However, cut the flowers as soon as they have faded to prevent seed formation which would unnecessarily exhaust the bulb.
