Description

Narcissus Segovia is a daffodil that blooms at the end of March. It produces small, surprising flowers with an intoxicating fragrance consisting of a round, white perianth and a wide open yellow crown. They are perched on long 15 cm (6in) stems. Its green foliage is deciduous. The sword-shaped leaves can exceed the floral stem, often reaching 50 cm (20in) long.

This variety reaches a height of 30 cm (12in) when fully grown. Native to the Mediterranean basin, daffodils can be grown in lawns, rockeries, plant borders, planters and pots. Its flowers can be cut for the vase, where it is best not to mix them with other flowers.

Daffodils are increasingly popular today as a symbol of spring. The Small-Crowned daffodil is toxic and does not tolerate bad weather such as rain, which damages the flower. Nevertheless, it is one of the most resistant autumn bulbs and a faithful perennial that returns every year. Narcissus features in a Greek legend in which a handsome young man rejected the love of the nymph Echo. As punishment, the gods made him only able to love his own reflection. When he perched above a fountain to drink, Narcissus saw his reflection and remained in contemplation until he eventually fell in and drowned, whereupon he transformed into a flower.

Planting and care

Plant daffodils in full sun or partial shade. They are easy to grow and will thrive both in the shade of a woodland and a sunny flower bed. They prefer moist but well-drained soil. Plant them in autumn, 12 cm (5in) deep and 10 cm (4in) apart, in minimum clusters of 5 bulbs, in uniform or mixed colours. To plant them in a lawn: lift a patch of turf, dig and loosen the soil to a depth of at least 20 cm (8in) (the height of a spade), place your bulbs, cover them with soil and replace the turf. Choose a spot where you won't be mowing too early as you must let the daffodil leaves wither before cutting them. This is when the bulb replenishes itself and prepares the flowers for the following year. However, remember to remove the flowers as soon as they fade to prevent seed formation which would deplete the bulb. Cut the leaves when they turn yellow and apply fertiliser at that time, not before. Maintain regular watering during growth and then let the soil dry out once the foliage is mature.
