Description
The late single Tulip 'Avignon' is still as prolific, despite being around for 50 years. This tall variety has a large, classic-shaped flower in a vibrant mix of faded red and orange, with a hint of pink at the centre of the petals. It blooms at the end of the tulip season, in May. Often underestimated, late single tulips perfectly complement perennials with their pure colours and are perfect for bouquets.
The 'Avignon' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Originally horticultural, it is currently classified in Division 5, which is characterized by late flowering. It will reach 65 cm (26in) in height when in bloom. Perched on stems well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the large flowers are elongated, elegant, and vibrant. It will flower in May - June, making it useful in the garden.
Late single Tulip 'Avignon' has a unique charm in the garden. It will fit well in large beds, alongside perennials such as peonies or pastel-toned ravenelle wallflowers. It will also help maximize the flowering duration of flower beds and can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots and containers. This tulip will look beautiful on balconies and terraces and it is ideal in elegant bouquets. When in a vase, use very little water, just a little at the bottom is enough! Additionally, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care
Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add manure or poorly decomposed compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Avignon' tulip will grow well in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a sunny or semi-shaded spot. Once flowering is over, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
