Description

The 'Brest' Double frilled Tulip is a peony-flowered variety with a luxurious and delicate appearance. The very double flowers of this tulip are a deep pink, bordered by a lace of small white fringes, to the point where the flower seems to have been caught by frost. It blooms quite late, in May, on short and sturdy stems. When cut, its flowers make wonderful bouquets.

The 'Brest' Tulip belongs to the Lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is the finely fringed tips of the petals. This tulip reaches a height of 40 cm when in bloom. Flowering takes place in May, a little later than other tulips. The flowers are double, with a round and full cup shape, and measure up to 6 cm wide. At the opening, the petals have some small green flames that then disappear to make way for a delightful palette of deep pink tones. The intensely fringed edges of this tulip are almost white. The flowers last a long time in the garden as well as in vases, allowing the tulip season to be extended until May.

Fringed tulips are appreciated for their sturdy stems, which give them good stability even in hot weather. The 'Brest' tulip can be planted en masse, or mixed with other varieties, in large flower beds. Combine it with other tulips, earlier ones, white, mauve or dark pink, to maximize the flowering period of the borders. It can also be used for edging, rockeries, as well as in pots and containers. This tulip beautifully enhances balconies and terraces. It pairs perfectly with the foreground of tall perennials such as peonies, bushes like hydrangeas and rhododendrons, and small ground cover plants: pulmonarias, wall bellflowers, and aubrietas serve as a backdrop and hide yellowed leaves in summer.

Planting and care

Preferably place the 'Brest' Tulip in a sunny spot from October to December for a beautiful spring flowering. You can also plant it in a partially shaded location. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in light, fertile, and well-drained, well loosened soil, at a depth of 15 cm (bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs 10 cm apart, making sure they do not touch each other for a mass effect. Cut the flower stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them.
