Strangely, these tulips have flowered as early as the end of March, and they are pale pink and white, not purple... Could this be due to a soil problem? Fertilizer? Watering??"

Description

Tulipa crispa 'Cummins' is perhaps the most beautiful of its kind. Its heavily fringed flower is stunning. It boasts a dark lilac to violet colour, and is widely scalloped with a lace of white. It blooms late in May, after the other tulips, on a sturdy and robust stem that withstands the elements. Pair it with the crystalline flowers of T. 'Daytona', and the pink pompoms of T. 'Queensland' in flower beds and bouquets.

Tulipa 'Cummins' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it was introduced in 1999 in the Netherlands. It is currently classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is to have finely toothed petal tips. This tulip will reach a height of 40 to 45cm (16 to 18in) when in bloom. Flowering takes place in May, at the end of the tulip season. The spectacular flowers are single. They boast a dark mauve-lilac colour with a pure white edge. Their shape resembles that of lily-flowered tulips, but the satin-like petals are adorned with an intensely laciniate border, with a colour and texture reminiscent of ice crystals. The flowers last a long time and extend the tulip season until May.

In the world of flowers, there is truly nothing comparable to laciniate tulips to spice up your spring garden with something unique. Ideal for borders, Tulipa 'Cummins' will also create beautiful spots in perennial flower beds, alongside biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose forget-me-nots, mignonette, dame's rocket, or wallflowers for this purpose. Laciniate tulips will bring a unique and refined touch to your bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant your tulips as soon as possible in well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 15cm (6in) (the bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch each other. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. Cut the flower stems after flowering and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them.

After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting heuchera, tiarella, brunnera, bleeding heart, or Euphorbia cyparissia at the forefront of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips, and will elegantly conceal the tulip's yellowed leaves.
