Description

The Double Fringed Tulip 'Qatar' is a superb, colourful, opulent variety with bright red flowers, finely dentate and bordered with white frost. It blooms towards the end of the tulip season on sturdy stems. Spectacular in flower beds, its cut flowers will make unique bouquets.

The Dentate Tulip 'Qatar' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, obtained in 2021, it is currently classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is finely dentate petal tips. This tulip will reach about 45-50cm (18-20in) in height when in bloom. The flowering period takes place between late April and early May, sometimes a little later depending on the climate. The flowers are fully double, with a round and full cup shape, and can measure up to 8-10cm (3-4in) wide when fully open. The petals display a bright red tone turning to a more pinkish red. The finely fringed edges of this tulip are white. The flowers last a long time in the garden as well as in vases, extending the tulip season until May.

Dentate tulips are appreciated for their sturdy stems, which give them good support even in hot weather. The Double Dentate Tulip 'Qatar' is planted in groups or mixed with other varieties in large flower beds. Combine it with other tulips, earlier ones, white, violet or dark pink, to maximize the flowering period in flower borders. It can also be planted as a border, in rockeries, as well as in pots and containers, with muscari, for example. This tulip also beautifies balconies and terraces. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials like early German irises, shrubs like dwarf rhododendrons, annuals such as Myosotis. Its flowers are enhanced by small ground cover plants: lungworts, wall bellflowers, Aubrietas and silver mound will serve as a setting and hide the yellowing leaves in summer.

Planting and care

Preferably place the double toothed tulip 'Qatar' in a sunny location from October to December for a beautiful spring flowering. You can also place it in a partially shaded area. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in a light, fertile, well-drained and well-prepared soil, at a depth of 15cm (6in) (bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart, making sure they do not touch each other for a mass effect. Cut the flower stalks after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
