Description

The 'Purple Crystal' fringed Tulip is a variety with particularly fringed petals. It offers an intense and velvety flower, in a wine colour, with a discreet contrasting white base. Its very durable, large flowers of 12 to 15 cm with fringed petals are remarkable in flower beds in April and May. Its long-lasting flowers, carried by a sturdy stem, are perfect for vases.

The 'Purple Crystal' Fringed Tulip belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is to have petals with finely toothed ends. This tulip will reach a height of about 40 cm when in bloom. Flowering takes place in April-May, a little later than other tulips. The flowers are single, with a slightly open cup, in a beautiful range of rich and dark tones, enhanced by the velvety texture of the petals. The fringed edges of this magnificent tulip add to its mysterious charm. The flowers last a long time and allow the tulip season to be extended until May.

In the world of flowers, there is truly nothing comparable to fringed tulips to spice up your garden in spring. Ideal for borders, the 'Purple Crystal' Tulip will also create beautiful spots in perennial flower beds, alongside biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose wallflowers for this purpose. The dark colour of 'Purple Crystal' enhances all neighbouring plants and pairs well with an infinite range of pastel or brighter colours, from white to pink and red, as well as all shades of blue. By choosing fringed tulips, you will bring a unique touch to your cut flower compositions.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Purple Crystal' Tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm, spacing them 10 cm apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add manure or poorly decomposed compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil. Plant it in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Once flowering is finished, remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the bulb. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them. We recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarelles, and Euphorbias in the foreground of your flower beds, as their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves. Red and orange are uncommon in the garden, so take advantage of the wide range of tulips in these colours. For an elegant effect, these tulips will be enhanced by dark green foliage, such as a hedge of Yews or Boxwoods. Also, consider dark foliage such as Obsidian Heuchera.
