Out of 10 bulbs: one beautiful, 8 small ones, some of which are withered, and one rotten that I had to throw away! I am a bit surprised. I hadn't had any complaints about the tulip bulbs ordered from this website until now. Description

The 'Ballade Lady' Lily-flowered Tulip is a pink and white lily-flowered tulip, a refined colour that invites you to stroll in a sunny garden. Its pearly petals open to reveal a beautiful yellow and green throat, giving the whole flower a touch of spring. For a late tulip, it persists quite well in the garden. Lovely when planted in groups, it is also a very good flower for bouquets.

The 'Ballade Lady' lily-flowered tulip, registered in 2004 in the Netherlands, belongs to the Liliaceae family. It is classified in Division 6 of horticultural tulips, which includes 15 divisions. The main characteristics of lily-flowered tulips are as follows: they have single flowers, they bloom in the second half of spring, and they have narrow cup-shaped flowers with pointed and recurved petals at opening and during the night. These petals open star-shaped at the end of blooming. During the day, these flowers become spider-like and widely open. They were created in the early 20th century. This variety reaches a height of 50cm (20in) when in bloom. Flowering takes place at the end of April or beginning of May. The foliage, a glaucous green colour, is thinner than that of other tulips. Each solitary flower is supported by a delicate-looking stem that is resistant to bad weather.

The 'Ballade Lady' lily-flowered tulip finds its place in large beds. Its freshness allows for associations with tulips in white or purple tones, creating a beautiful contrast. It pairs perfectly with its companion 'Ballade', which has a more assertive colour but is still harmonious. Pair it with Corsican hellebores, lady's mantles, and spurges for surprising scenes. It can also be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, as well as in pots and containers. This tulip enhances balconies and terraces beautifully. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials and is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. When placing it in a vase, use very little water, just a bottom layer is enough! Furthermore, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day. Many varieties of lily-flowered tulips are grown for forcing and produce cut flowers for a large part of the year.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Ballade Lady' tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is complete, it is best to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
