Description

Tulipa 'Marietta' is a lily-flowered tulip bearing a silky corolla with a stylised shape that enhances its vibrant carmine pink colour, making it easy to combine in spring flower beds. For a late tulip, it persists well in the garden and faithfully blooms every spring. Supported by a long, sturdy stem, this old variety is also an excellent cut flower for charming bouquets. A reliable choice!

Tulipa 'Marietta' was registered in the Netherlands in 1942. It belongs to the Liliaceae family. It is classified in division 6 of horticultural tulips, lily-flowered tulips. Tulips in this category were created in the early 20th century. They have the following main characteristics: they bear single flowers, they bloom in the second half of spring, the cups are narrow, and the pointed petals are recurved at opening and open into a star shape to reveal a small white throat occupied by yellow stamens. During the day, these flowers become spider-like and fully open. This variety will reach a height of 50 to 55cm (20 to 22in) when in bloom. Flowering takes place around mid-May, emerging from foliage that is thinner than that of other tulips. Each solitary flower is supported by a seemingly delicate stem, but it is resistant to bad weather. The foliage naturally yellows and dries a few weeks after flowering, while the bulb enters summer dormancy.

Tulipa 'Marietta' looks wonderful in organised large flower beds, as well as in contemporary or romantic settings, depending on the desires of each gardener. Since its blooming is late, it lengthens the flowering period. Combine it with white, black, or pink varieties of tulips, and/or with other spring bulbs. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots, and containers. This tulip beautifully enhances balconies and patios. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials. Its flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day. Many varieties of lily-flowered tulips are grown for forcing and produce cut flowers for a large part of the year.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
