Description
Eucalyptus regnans, the giant gum or royal gum, is one of the largest trees in the world and the tallest of the eucalypts. Its slender, almost vertical trunk, conical habit and evergreen foliage in shades of green to grey-green give it an architectural presence. In a mild, cool, damp oceanic climate, it quickly forms an outstanding specimen, remarkable as a standalone tree in the middle of a lawn. It is offered here in the form of seeds for gardeners with plenty of space to follow the growth of this giant step by step, from sowing to mature tree.
Growing from seed means you can obtain this eucalyptus at a lower cost with a little skill and patience, and it produces trees better adapted to their soil.
Eucalyptus regnans belongs to the Myrtaceae family. It is commonly known as the royal gum, giant gum or giant eucalyptus. From a botanical standpoint, there are two main synonyms: Eucalyptus amygdalina var. regnans and Eucalyptus regnans var. fastigata. The species is native to south-eastern Australia, particularly central and eastern Victoria and Tasmania, where it forms vast forests in cool, damp areas of low to mid-mountain zones, on deep, moist soils.
It is an evergreen tree with a very long lifespan, which can exceed 70 to 90m in height in the wild, or even around a hundred metres for the largest specimens. In our oceanic latitudes, one can expect 25 to 30m under very favourable conditions. The bark of the straight trunk is fibrous and brown over the first few metres, then becomes smooth and light grey, almost white, towards the top. The habit, distinctly conical in young trees, remains fairly narrow before broadening in very old specimens. The leaves are simple, entire, lanceolate to sickle-shaped, often measuring 10 to 20cm long and 2 to 5cm wide, green to grey-green, sometimes slightly more glaucous. The juvenile leaves are broader, softer and a duller green. It flowers in late spring or early summer with small white, petal-less flowers with numerous stamens, grouped in clusters of 9 to 15 in nectar-rich umbels. These develop into woody capsules a few millimetres across, which open by valves to release a multitude of very fine seeds, dispersed by the wind.
Growth is particularly rapid in young trees: in natural or commercial stands, average growth rates of 1 to 2m per year have been recorded, with trees reaching 15m in 8 years and over 30m in around twenty years, in suitable climates. In Europe, one can hope for a well-formed young tree after 8 to 10 years, but experimental data are lacking. There is no statistical track record as there is for Eucalyptus gunnii or E. niphophila. The hardiness of this species is moderate: –4 to –5 °C for a mature specimen.
The giant gum is only suitable for large gardens, private parks or estates located in a humid oceanic climate sheltered from severe frosts. It should be planted as a standalone specimen on a vast lawn, where its straight trunk and conical silhouette stand out against the sky. Its need for light rules out planting in dense groups: it requires plenty of space around it.
In its natural range, Eucalyptus regnans is a major species in Australian forestry, widely exploited for its construction and paper-making wood. It is also an emblematic species of the great damp forests of Tasmania, which harbour remarkable biodiversity and rank among the most carbon-rich forests on the planet. The species regenerates naturally mainly from seed after fires, unlike many other eucalypts which regrow from the stump.

Planting and care
To succeed with Eucalyptus regnans seeds, it is recommended to cold-stratify them before sowing to achieve more even germination.
Mix the seeds with a little slightly damp sand or vermiculite and place them in the refrigerator for about 3 to 4 weeks. In early spring, prepare a light, well-draining mix based on seed compost, possibly blended with a little sand or perlite. Sow the seeds on the surface, without covering them, or barely covering them, with a fine layer of substrate, as they need light to germinate. Keep in a bright spot, at a mild temperature of 15 to 20°C, with the substrate constantly moist but not waterlogged. Germination generally occurs within 2 to 6 weeks, sometimes somewhat unevenly.
When the seedlings reach a few centimetres in height and bear several true leaves, transplant them individually into larger pots filled with a substrate that is still light but more nutritious. Place them in a very bright position, in non-scorching sun and water regularly so that the root ball never dries out completely. As soon as outdoor temperatures warm, gradually acclimatise the young plants to the outdoors (a few hours a day at first), sheltered from cold wind.
Plant in open ground only when the young trees are sufficiently robust and well-rooted, in a suitable climate (very mild oceanic zone, without severe frosts). This is best done in spring, after all risk of frost, in deep, neutral to slightly acidic soil, well-drained but remaining moist, with regular rainfall or watering.
Eucalyptus regnans needs water to grow well and does not tolerate dry soils well. Plant it in full sun, giving it plenty of space, away from buildings and power lines, as it can become a very large tree. Water generously at planting, mulch the base to retain moisture, and water regularly for the first few years, until the root system has established itself deeply.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
