Description

The Vegetable Soybean (Glycine max or hispida) is an annual, climbing plant that belongs to the legume family. Like beans, peas, and fava beans, it is rich in proteins. Still relatively uncommon in our gardens, it is not more difficult to grow than beans, even though it requires a minimum of warmth and sunlight to develop. The Vegetable Soybean thrives in sandy soil, fairly rich and well-drained.

From the Vegetable Soybean, we harvest pods that contain seeds that can be consumed fresh or dried. Its high protein content makes it a perfect food in the context of a vegetarian diet.

Soybean sowing is done in May - June. Harvest takes place 75 to 90 days later.

Planting and care

Soy is sown in warm, humus-rich and well-drained soil. Sandy soils are particularly suitable.

Sowing in open ground: Sowing is done in late spring, when there is no longer any risk of frost. It is done directly in the ground, placing a seed every 5cm (2in) or so, in furrows spaced + or - 70cm (28in) apart. Then cover with fine soil and, if necessary, water for the first time.
