Description

The 'Sugar Baby' Watermelon is a pretty variety, quite early, that offers fruits weighing 2 to 3 kg, with an average diameter of 20 cm (8in). Their green skin contains a dark red flesh, with a sweet flavour. This very refreshing fruit is sown in April for a summer harvest.

The watermelon is an annual vegetable plant with creeping stems. It is cultivated for its spherical fruits, with sweet and melting flesh that is consumed raw like other melons. It is a very refreshing fruit highly appreciated in hot regions. Very good jams and sorbets can also be made from it. Watermelons have antiscorbutic, purifying, and refreshing properties, and contain vitamins (A, B, C) and minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron).

The watermelon requires well-fertilised soil, a warm and sunny exposure, as well as regular watering.

Harvest: watermelons are harvested when ripe: they lose their shiny color and sound hollow when tapped.

Storage: they can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days.

The gardener's tip: Regular hoeing and weeding are recommended, and mulching is advised.

Planting and care

Sowing in April.

Seeds are sown in early April in pots filled with compost and placed in a bright room or a greenhouse at over 20°C (68°F) for good germination.

Place 2 or 3 seeds per pot. When the plants have a few leaves, keep only one plant per pot. Plant the watermelon plants with their root ball in mid-May when there is no longer any risk of frost, in holes enriched with compost and spaced 1m (3ft) apart in all directions.

Maintenance

Watering should be plentiful and frequent, but with water at room temperature to not hinder plant growth. A mulch is beneficial.

Hoeing and weeding are recommended.
