Description

This Flowering Meadow Mix for Bees is a selection of perennial and annual plants chosen for their ability to attract and nourish bees. Easy to grow in ordinary soil and requiring very little maintenance, they can be sown directly in place in spring or even autumn in mild climates, in a sunny, well-worked and well-loosened soil. Their flowering periods extend from spring to the end of summer, providing an abundant source of food for pollinators. The massif will flower for at least two years and also provide a refuge for biodiversity. Some plants will self-sow wherever they please.

This selection consists of 27 varieties, including borage (Borago officinalis), cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), cultivated coriander (Coriandrum sativum), Cosmos bipinnatus and Cosmos sulphureus, Chinese forget-me-not (Cynoglossum amabile), viper's bugloss (Echium plantagineum), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), annual sunflower (Helianthus annuus), bird's-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), and phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia). All these plants show rapid growth and easily naturalise through spontaneous sowing in ordinary, well-drained soil. The size of the plants varies from 30 cm (11.8 in) to over 1 m (3 ft 4 in) in height.

Flowering meadows are very trendy. This beautiful alternative to a lawn blooms throughout the entire growing season while requiring very little maintenance. Watering if the weather is very dry and mowing to 10 cm (3.9 in) above ground in autumn will be more than enough. Ideal for adding colour and life to a slightly wild and sunny area of the garden, whether in a flower bed or a flowering meadow, this mix also attracts bees to fruit trees, promoting pollination and fruit production. Invite nature into your garden: sow our flower mixes along pathways, or on the embankment along a sunken path, or at the back of the garden bordering the countryside.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Sow directly in place from March to early June, once the soil has warmed up, in well-prepared soil that has ben cleared of weeds and raked. Sow thinly on the surface of the soil and lightly rake to cover the seeds. Alternatively, sow at a depth of 1.5 mm (0.1 in) in furrows spaced 30 cm (11.8 in) apart. Germination normally takes 14 to 30 days.

Cultivation:

When the young plants appear, water well and remove weeds. In autumn, at the end of flowering, seeds can be collected and sown elsewhere. Water well to make the seeds adhere to the soil. Prune or mow to 10 cm (3.9 in) at the end of flowering.
